    Hi all

I have a 3ish year old LG washing machine. It has started throwing up an IE error halfway through a cycle. I ran the diagnostic thing and it tells me this is a filling error and to check the water pressure, kinks in the supply pipe etc. I have done all that and no issues, I’ve given it a good clean as well in everywhere you can. I also had the top off and checked the pipe to the pressure sensor as I know this is a common fault. Everything in order.

    The problem characterises itself as:

    1. The machine will only push water through the prewash part of the powder tray, nothing comes through the main wash one, so powder just stays there.
    2. If I run a short cycle, the 20 min or 14 min one, everything is fine, other that problem 1.
    3. If I run a longer cycle it gets about 15/20 mins in and throws the IE error.

I’m wondering if this is either an issue with the filling valve arrangement (doesn’t explain the IE halfway through), or it’s just the brain in the PCB gone haywire. Incidentally some of the display screen LED failed as it was just out of warranty (LG not interested).

    Any help greatly appreciated!

check the inlet valves for open circuit coils

valve thats gone probably feeds the wash tray and it will be the same one used on the rinses

Thanks will crack the multimeter out.

    Do these things commonly fail?

would have thought not a 3 years but you have to check. if you assume anything it could be wrong

Hi Dave, so maybe I’m going mad, but all three of the terminals show no continuity on my multimeter.

the coils are about 3 to 5000 ohms so you may be on too lower scale

Ok great thanks for that. I get readings on the outer two, the red and blue ones, but the middle white one is 0. I guess this is the reason? I’ll see if I can get the part.

Hi again – bit of a crazy outcome here. I fitted a replacement inlet valve unit, all went well. Started the machine up for a cycle and it started to fill through the main drawer – great. However it didn’t stop filling. Now the drum is literally half full with water and whenever the unit is plugged in the main inlet is running! I switched off at the mains and when I switch on it starts filling again.

that unfortunatly sounds like a device in the board called a triac has failed

bad news on you machine they surround the board with resin so you cant change them

result you need a new main board

assuming of course you have not got the connections wrong

Thanks Dave – certain I have the connections right. Do you think it’s worth bothering with, or are we better with a new machine?

really depends on what the board cost

its really bad luck for such a young machine

LG offer a £145 fixed repair. I may do that.

A very slim chance, because it is only 3 years old, that the air trap is blocked-up OR the pressure switch hose from the air trap is friction worn – got a hole in the pipe in other words! Either one would cause over filling. The new valve could even be faulty and not shutting off the water – very rare I grant you. OR the actual pressure switch itself. All sounds very strange to me and very bad luck. The pcb triac seldom if ever fail unless caused by shorted out valve wires for some reason and that in itself is very uncommon. All based on my limited experience with LG which despite the hype are good machines but not that commonly seen in my neck of the woods.

    Hi Andy
I still think board as he said above it starts filling as soon as its plugged in before the prog is started
