My dishwasher does a cold water pre-wash before draining and then refilling for a hot water wash. Can I use half a teaspoon of laundry powder, such as Persil, to make the cold pre-wash slightly more effective?

By rights, I should use a dishwasher powder but I doubt I will need much for pre-washes to justify buying a large packet. I use a detergent tablet for the main dishwasher wash.

You can put laundry detergent in if you want to give the kitchen floor a good clean as well and possibly wreck the dishwasher.:o Do not under any circumstances use laundry detergent or washing up liquid. It’s just as daft as putting petrol in a diesel car.

Thank you. I can easily see using washing up liquid in the dishwasher is daft but thought (low sudsing) Persil powder might not be so bad.

I was going to throw in half a teaspoon where the dishes go to make it get used in the prewash.

I believe in America some machines have a prewash detergent compartment. Others there have an indentation on the detergent-retaining flap to sprinkle and measure prewash detergent.

Here is someone making a reference to it: “Use the pre wash section of your dishwasher, it helps to wash your dishes more effectively. I didn’t know this, so I thought you all should too.” https://www.reddit.com/r/Frugal/comments/khtvxv/use_the_pre_wash_section_of_your_dishwasher_it/

Most of the trade are well aware of using a small amount of PROPER DISHWASHER DETERGENT in the prewash. Although with the modern detergents it is hardly necessary.
The chemical make up of dishwasher and laundry detergent is completely different in every possible way.

It appears the American machines are different from our European ones in a number of ways. They have a detergent prewash facility but don’t have a built-in water softener like ours do. I don’t know if this is because more homes there have water softeners than us?
