ParticipantHi guys/gals,
So, a sorry saga. My Hotpoint dishwasher has problems…started out with it causing an electrical trip at the consumer unit soon after starting a cycle. Strong smell of burning/hot plastic etc. Unplugged, reset the trip to restore power to the house 🙂
Next day started troubleshooting, plugged back in, powered up with no further trips…yay! But showed an A-10 error code even without starting a programme. Found to be indicating a heater issue so I ordered a replacement heater.
Several days later stripped down found a massively burnt connector to the heater which was seemingly the source for the burnt smell. Stripped pump/heater and replaced the heater. Remade the power connection. Lots of huffing and puffing involved but a successful repair was anticipated…
Replumbed and plugged in, power-up…no A-10 error code. Yay!
Run programme, machine makes normal filling noises, time left display counts down but then the flashes to A-5 error after a couple of minutes 🙁
A-5 is suggested to be a detected issue at the pressure switch…which I presume means either fail to fill (thus pressure switch not switched) or successful fill but switch failed to switch.
Confession, I failed to anticipate quite the amount of water remaining in pump when stripping down. A goodly bit of water dripped down onto pressure switch during disassembly 🙁 Left it all a good while to dry before retrying but am unsure as to whether these switches are particularly susceptible to water damage?
Any other advice suggestions…apart from the obvious one of ‘WTF are you doing trying to repair such a dinosaur that wasn’t even a very good machine when new?’ 😮

ParticipantThanks for the input Dave.
Grrrrr! Just removed pressure switch and it switches as expected – audibly can be heard to switch when pressure is applied to tube, also switches from closed circuit to open circuit on the outside 2 (of the 3 contacts) on the switch. I also blew back through the pipe from where it meets the switch into the machine and there was little resistance and bubbling could be heard. All of the above suggests to me that the switch is doing what it should so now I’m really left in head-scratching mode.

Moderatorhave a check and make sure the pressure sw wires are properly connected to the board as its on the same connecter as the heater by the looks of it

ParticipantNot sure whether to laugh or cry…
Rechecked operations on 24/10 and machine still went into A-5 fault within a couple of minutes of starting a programme. Debated with Mrs wclark1238 whether it was time to write it off and invest in a new machine but in the end we decided to ‘invest’ in a Domestic and General insurance repair. As it’s a very old machine (>10 years) this came in at £25/month for 6 months…bullet bitten I booked the repair visit.
Engineer due to attend on 27/10. When I got home from work on 25/10 after a late shift I thought I’d give the machine another try. Same issue, A-5 after 2 minutes.
Engineer arrived 27/10, pulled machine out from under the counter-top, removed the top cover and started a programme…and the little ba$tard worked as advertised, no errors at all 😮
So, I’m taking credit for the fix:confused: I was the one that changed the blown heater after all. So pi$$ed off to have ‘invested’ £40 in a new heater and then needlessly another £150 in an insurance policy that turned out to be unneeded.
What can you do?
Thanks again for reading and replying.
