ParticipantHi, hope you’re all well.
Long time no post! I have recently discovered a weird issue and was wondering if I need to be concerned?
I have a valve guitar amplifier that works fine and also an ISE10 that I assumed was also working fine, I’ve noticed a problem with excessive mains noise on the amplifier before today however I assumed it was something else causing it. Today I could hear my washing machine downstairs on spin and the noise in the amplifier coincided with the spin speed of the washer. So I’ve likely found the culprit! It’s not massively loud but it’s there clearly, passing noise into the mains wiring.
The washer is on a fused spur, on a seperate Kitchen ring from the upstairs ring main, they are both on the same side of the consumer unit though. I was probably about 2-3 metres away from the washer on the floor above.
So the questions are, is this an issue or should I not be worried? Do all brushless DC motors produce RF when in use? Should I be checking something? Is there a mains suppressor on the motor?
My ISE is from 2009, works fine with no issues now (had a problem with a control board and also the heater in its life), it was stored for 4.5 years unused however. Thanks

ModeratorAll domestic appliances have to have a mains suppressor fitted by law. It’s not on the motor, the mains cable feeds directly into the suppressor. Wouldn’t expect a 3 phase motor to cause much ‘noise’ though?

ParticipantIs it mains noise you are hearing or Radio Frequency pickup. I ask as I have a DAB radio sitting a couple of feet above our washing machine and the DAB reception drops right off when the washing machine motor is running. FM reception is not noticeably affected.

Moderatorat that distance its possible
I had a plug in car charger the affects the radio in my car. so some of these appliances can affect radios close to them
I agree its not supposed to but it does

ParticipantThanks all, it’s definitely noise migrating into the kitchen ring main from the washing machine. It was a cyclical noise coinciding with a wash and rinse drum rotation.
iadom yeah I’ve seen the mains suppressor on the schematic, at the top where the mains comes in, could this wear out or become less effective over time perhaps? I’ve not noticed this issue as bad before tbh, but maybe I wasnt looking, hahaha.
I guess I was concerned that some fault may develop putting safety at risk or something?
Thanks all.

ModeratorTo be honest the only time I have changed mains suppressors on any appliance is because they have either gone down to earth or exploded. I suppose the only way to know would be to replace the mains suppressor.

Cheers dude, I have a spare somewhere I think. I might get it out and see if it helps.
Thanks
