So I have the traditional pre-xmas crisis, and I have spent hours looking on the internet for answers, but to no avail.

About a week ago the main fan oven went rogue and started incinerating everything. Having successfully swapped out a failed element previously I tested that and concluded it was sound. I then swapped out the thermal cutout and the ego thermostat assuming it would be one of those. Sadly not.

I then realised the selector switch ran roughly and on inspection found damage on the very rear of the cam, it looked as if some little tab or stop had gone inside the cam, almost as if it had been forced in the wrong direction at some point. I then got the ego switch and attempted to refit.

The nub of my problem is that the thermostat shaft and the selector switch cam appear to wish to rotate in opposite directions. The part numbers appear to be correct and the thermostat and switch are visually identical to the originals, and those parts seem to have exactly the same contrary direction issue.

I can see that it is possible to put the thermostat and/or switch on upside down and complicate things but I’m pretty confident I haven’t done that. I’m mystified!

this is the weird one where you turn the knob anticlockwise to turn it on. that means the stat is on its highest setting in the off position. you have to turn the stat fully clockwise to connect it to the switch so when you turn it on your turning the temp down

Everything is back together and working because of your sprinkling of wisdom. Obviously my grasp of the nature of a thermostat is somewhat sketchy. Thank you for helping me at this stressful moment my Xmas cheer has narrowed down to feeding my old-ish parents on the day, and I was staring down the barrel.
My other half would also like to thank you as she was hiding in the front room for most of the afternoon!
