    Hi,

I have a Liebherr fridge freezer Model: CPES 4613, Service number: 0918773-02

Recently the alarm started to come on. For a couple of weeks I reset the alarm by turning on the Superfrost. I then started to notice that both the fridge and freezer weren’t cooling properly so I started to think a bit more what to do.

I remembered a similar fault happened 10 years ago and I checked the repair invoice and saw that the evaporator sensor was replaced.

So on a hunch I ordered a new evaporator sensor from UK Whitegoods and fitted it. The fridge was now was cooler than before and so was the freezer but after a few days the alarm started to go off again. I then set the freezer to -25 and the fridge to 3. Today the alarm went off again but this time I pressed the alarm button to silence the alarm but didn’t touch the Superfrost. I then noticed that after some time the alarm went off.

So I think the unit can cool the freezer to an acceptable temperature since the alarm light cleared but I am puzzled why the alarm keeps coming on every now and again. Is it a problem with the freezer temperature sensor (which has never been replaced) or something else?

    Thanks for your help

    Daniel

Alarm value has to be exceeded for at least 90 minutes for an alarm to be set off (e.g. set value: -18°C , actual value at sensor at -13°C for 90 minutes, alarm) Visual: Flashing LED in the alarm Off button. During start-up the LED in the alarm Off button flashes until switch-off value has been reached. The audible alarm is suppressed

    Thanks Tony.

I’m trying to work out if a new freezer sensor will fix the problem or if given it’s 16 years old it’s ability to cool is compromised (e.g. by losing refrigerant) which I guess could explain the alarm coming on.

If the refrigerant has gone I think I’m looking at a new appliance.

Roughly how long do these Liebherr appliances last before they lose their refrigerant or otherwise lose their ability to cool to the set temperatures?

We would need to know what actual temperatures you are getting in both sections via seperate thermometers, to confirm it is able to get to the temperatures required, before anything can be diagnosed.

Here are the results of some tests I ran today across several cooling cycles

    Fridge set temperature +1 deg
Minimum temperature on lowest shelf : +5 deg
Maximum temperature on lowest shelf: +9 deg

    Freezer set temperature: -32 deg
Minimum temperature in bottom drawer: -19 deg
Maximum temperature in bottom drawer: -5 deg

Since the set temperatures aren’t being reached does this mean there is a lack of refrigerant and/or a problem with the air sensor in the fridge?

Is the compressor constantly running ? if yes then sensors are telling it to run and cool / freeze, if not then something is stopping it, so there are lots of variables as to the problem.

Yes there’s a noise all the time from the appliance although I can’t easily touch the compressor.

I can also reach round the back and touch a small diameter vertical pipe that is sometimes very hot and at other times is at ambient temperature. Presumably that indicates when cooling is happening.

If the pipe goes cool, then I would suspect the compressor is not running, the compressor is switched on and off by either of the three sensors on this unit. The freezer sensor and the fridge evaporator sensor turn the compressor ON, the freezer sensor and the fridge air sensor turn the compressor OFF. So its possible that either of the remaining sensors not already replaced may be faulty. First thing to try is to activate the super cool and see if the temperatures drop, when the super cool is turned on the unit will cool/freeze to maximum temperatures for 65 hours, if these low temperatures are reached the I believe you can then rule out gas or weak compressor problems, and concentrate on the other two sensors, which are the same as the one already replaced, part number 9590206.

Hi, I ran the Superfrost over the weekend and the freezer got to -20 whilst the fridge got to +5.

Since both are above the set temperature am I to think this means there is problem with the refrigeration, e.g lack of refrigerant or compressor problem?

It does sound like it is one or the other, only an Engineer visit can confirm which you have.
