Hi, I have a 20 year old Bosch double oven. The other day the fan oven stopped heating. I suspected the element had gone which was correct as it had physically snapped in half. I changed this however still no heat. A neighbour who’s a bit more clued up and has some test equipment and he had a look. He found a thermal cut out had gone which will stop it heating however he tested the rest of the oven with an ‘insulation resistance tester’ and said it failed his tests. He thought as my house wiring is old and isn’t RCD protected these ‘earth leakages’ have gone unnoticed and to make it safe or at least pass these tests both the top oven grill and base elements should be replaced as well despite them both working? Does this sound correct or is he being over cautious?

He also said elements have a tendency to attract moisture which can make them fail the insulation test however this mustn’t be the case as we have been using the 2 elements mentioned regularly since the bottom fan oven stopped working.

the earth leakage although not desirable will not stop your oven working. yes if you installed a safety trip it may trip out but as long as the oven is solidly earthed its not unsafe to use

something else must have blown when the element failed

Hi Dave, he identified that a thermal cut out at the back of the oven was causing it to no longer heat, he bypassed it by joining the wires together temporarily to see if it would now work which it did but said he couldn’t leave it bypassed as it wouldn’t be safe.

I’m really not sure what I’m doing past putting in a new element so if I was to get an engineer would they fit the new cut out even though it fails these insulation tests?

    thanks

so buy the cut out and replace it

can only be 2 screws and 2 wires most of the time

have you got an Enr number and an Fd number ?

All it was as it failed these tests I was concerned it wasn’t safe and also these elements he found to have earth leakage wouldn’t last much longer so didn’t want to go to much trouble fixing 1 problem and find in a couple of weeks these elements give problems too.

well the part is no longer available (over 2 years ago) so that answers your question

you may find a used one on ebay if someone is stripping the same unit but if not thats it

for your interest it was made sept 2004

also if you fitted a copy oven element then I have had all sorts of problems with these. including watching a new one burn out while i was testing it

Hi again Dave, is there any way to find out what temperature the cut out gets activated at? Just wondering if I could find that out I might have a better chance at finding one to fit and keep it going a bit longer.

No temperature written on it, it does however have some kind of code. On one side it’s got Z42K A115KG. Can’t read anything else but it does have a red dot on the top?? Don’t know if that has any relevance.

this is not your stat but you can see the temp on the face. in this case 130 degrees.

have you looked on the base ?

Had a look on the base but it’s completely blank for some reason.
