ParticipantHi all,
I’ve been trying to diagnose and fix our 13 year old Neff fridge freezer. We noticed that it was turning on as often as needed. When it does turn on, it successfully cools the fridge and then turns itself off again. Internally, the temperate light flashes correctly to indicate that it “knows” it’s too warm.
I’ve replace the relay next to the condenser, cleaned all the cooling fins, and now replaced the capacitor, but it hasn’t improved matters. In fact, the capacitor change seems to have made things worse!
What’s the next area I should check please?
Thanks,
Chris

Moderatorthis sounds more like a board or sensor issue as the compressor is doing its job

Thanks Dave. Is it worth continuing with the home investigations, or have we reached the point where it’s going to be uneconomic to fix it?

Moderatorif it was me i would look at the control board for blown components and to see how the power supply for it is made
unless you can solder electronic components then its a non starter

But wouldn’t that stop it turning on at all? At the moment it’s still turning itself on about once a day, but not enough. That’s why I thought the capacitor might be the problem. I wondered whether it was struggling to charge, which meant the condenser couldn’t be kick-started as often as needed.

Moderatorcondensor does not work that way
to be technical it causes a phase shift to on winding in a single phase motor to start it. if the cap fails the motor would not start or have a lot of difficulty doing so as it fails. we get the same fault on tumble dryers and customers find it will start with small loads onlyif its a board power supply issue it would struggle to start and it may alter the temps it is reading from the sensor
