ParticipantMy 18-year-old Miele Novotronic 500 was diagnosed BER today with a broken drum mount. It had never needed any previous repair work and the engineer advised that it had done about 14,500 hours so I’m not complaining and will be sorry to see it go.
I’ve been looking at the Miele web site and considering lower-end models such as the WCA030 and WSA023. Both are enough for our requirements (two adults) and we’re generally allergic to bells and whistles. Accepting that neither is likely to be quite as well made as the old machine, has anyone any strong views pro or con? Alternatively, would anyone like to recommend an alternative? Reliability and longevity are important.
All opinions welcome — many thanks in advance.

ModeratorThere is a thread here from a little while ago. I think with the way the world is at the moment that a machine with a good guarantee is the way to go.
Now there is the Ebac range which have a 7 year warranty, only thing is not a lot is known about the brand and so far only available via a few outlets.
Alternatives? Bosch or AEG.

Many thanks — that’s very helpful. I did see the earlier thread and wondered why Miele had reduced the warranty period to two years — not exactly confidence-inspiring. I’ll investigate Ebac carefully and also have a look at Bosch and AEG although having read the manufacturer write-ups on this (excellent) site I’m not exactly inspired by either.

ModeratorTrouble is you need a washing machine so you have to take a punt and like everything these days there is always an element of risk.
On a positive note, if you look after your appliances they will look after you 😀

Well, I looked after the old one as best I could (regular cleaning, no overloading) and it did us proud. I’ll be very happy if whatever succeeds it is still going by the time I peg it…
Ebac looks very interesting and a seven-year warranty sounds very attractive — many thanks for the suggestion.

ParticipantI’ve had my Bosch 9 1/2 years and I’ve just recently replaced the motor brushes, otherwise its been a solid buy.

ParticipantHad my WDD030 Miele 5 yrs
Family of 4 so it gets used a lot.it’s by far the best washer i’ve owned. Cleaning is phenomenal – typical kids stained clothing, mud/grass stains, curry, the lot. I never use vanish, just detergent & let Miele do it’s job.
Interestingly laundry is in a loose pile at the end of wash, not stuck to the sides of drum. Therefore much less ironing as alot of items dry crease free – joggers/hoodies, school uniform like blazers, skirts, trousers. I get away with a lot less ironing. Win, win!
Miele every time for me from now on. I’ve had several brands in the past & Miele has been by far the best.

ParticipantIf Miele still offered 5 and 10 year warranties I would seriously consider their washing machines but the price differential with other brands is just too much when only 2 years are offered. This is especially true as if it does fail out of warranty you are pretty much forced to use Miele’s expensive parts and technicians to resolve the issue.
To put my cards on the table, when my machine recently failed I decided to chance a cheap Beko as I’m just not convinced you get what you pay for in the more expensive machines. Unfortunately the first machine failed after two weeks (drum hitting door seal) but was replaced without question. The replacement has so far proved fine 8 months in so I’m putting the first down to an unfortunate early life failure.
In terms of performance I can’t fault it. It’s quiet and washes and spins well, so now only time will tell if my gamble pays off in the long run. -
