Is it a silly Q , but if your tumble dryer has a start capacitor with 8 squiggle squiggle written on it, is it bad/wrong/dangerous to ft a larger, er stronger one, for eg i have a tuble dryer that had one with an 8 , if i fit one that says 18 on it is it bad/wrong/dangerous, or doesnt it make the slightest difference?

    Thanks Experts

There is a 0.5 viable in the capacitor so 8 can go to 9 no problem but wouldn’t put a 10 on

capacitors are measured in micro farads (uF)

if it is an 8uF thats fitted I would say fit the correct one. Its no more difficulty to get the correct one

Yes thanks Kai+Dave, i have a HOTPOINT FTCF87 i acquired it knowing the capacitor was iffy , the only one i had to hand was an 18 uF, I actually think it came off a Beko washing machine, ill order an 8uF tomorrow, i just wondered whether putting a much bigger one, whether it is dangerous, knowing that they provide that extra kick for the motor, and would a washing machine one be any different to a dryer capacitor (in the main )?

Follow up Q , when they humm, and wont start the motor , IS it doing any damage to the motor itself humming away but not doing anything?

the motor will overheat if it cant start plus the heater will blow the safety stat with no air going through it

The hotpoint capacitor is a 8.5 from memory so either a 8 or 9 will be fine as I know the newer ones are 9

    have see 7uF as well
    size depends on motor fitted
