ParticipantGreetings!
Am I just imagining it or is it getting more difficult to find dishwasher *powder* in the supermarkets? In the past couple of weeks, I’ve failed to find any in two Tesco stores and a Morrisons but all had oodles of tablets, gel, whathaveyou… I eventually found a powder refill pack in Waitrose (hooray for John Lewis again).
Is this a plot by the powder/tablet/gel manufacturers to force us to use tablets or gel etc with their presumably higher margins. And of course, as is often repeated in this forum, many dishwashers such as my 1987 Bosch model were not designed to use tablets, so wash less effectively with them, and this probably encourages you to wash again or more frequently.
Has anyone else noticed this or can shed any light on what is going on?

KeymasterYes I have noticed a lack of powder also as I was looking for some to test a Dishdrawer out last week and found as you did. I’ve no idea why though but I’d expect that that’s just what people are buying. 😕

Spot on there Vince
Check out all the “4 in 1” tablets rubbish on TV is exactly their plan. Supply and demand has taken over ‘big time’ in this very instant. Consumers find it much easier to open a tablet sachet and place it in the dispenser than weild a huge carton of powder spilling the contents everywhere but!
Powder and powder refills are to be found everywhere at the moment, but for how long?…dunno, not long I reckon.
And the price of these tablets????…thru the roof they are!!!! Just reinforcing what the manufacturers, distributors and retailers already have realised…..that those that can afford to have a dishwasher, can afford the extra for detergent supply. Once the demand is established they have ‘Joe Public’ by the proverbial 😕

…not to mention the fact that each tab is a pre-measured dose designed to cope with even the dirtiest of pans/crockery (i.e. a measured over-dose for the lightly soiled stuff!) 😉

KeymasterI’ve now used, in the interests of research, Finish 3-in-1 tabs, finish tabs, Finish liquid, Finish “powerball” powder and Fairy tabs.
The fairy tabs smell nicer. Other than that without back-to-back comparisons it’s hard to quantify any difference on a day-to-day level.
I also tried some of the own-brand muck, but let’s not slag the supermarkets too much eh? 😉

Attilla (The Mrs) bought a large container of Sun at our local Morrisons this evening with no problems at all. How long this may last is open to debate. Dare one say “collusion”? Dare one see if it’s in the spellchecker? It just strikes me as a little odd that all these different supplies of powder should start to run out together………?
I assume that the producers wish to control their market place – You Vill Buy Frothy Tabs to the detriment of your dishwasher – especially if it’s Chinese.
I think the trade side of the site needs to do a bit of research into this and find out what the manufacturers intentions are.

Thanks to everyone who has responded.

That would be helpful. The temptation is to stockpile detergent powder but of course that just makes the problem worse. I think though that in future I will always have a full spare pack in the house until it is clear the supply situation has returned to the way it was.

There’s no point stockpiling detergents as they do have a finite life I’m afraid and lose their effectiveness through time if they lie unused. This is compounded if they’re not stored correctly as well as some of the ingredients do degrade.
Even is a “dry” environment you’ll notice that the powder at the bottom of the box tends to form a solid mass that you have to hammer away at to loosen it up. This is one of the things that the tablets gets around by sealing each one in it’s own little airtight package so that the detergent stays “fresh”.
This applies to washing machine detergents as well as dishwasher.
