ParticipantHi
The alarm goes off but fridge/freezer feel cold, the red light stays on when pressed to stop alarm and fridge sounds quiet.
I then turn it off for 10secs or so and then back on again – temp light goes off and fridge makes running noises. This lasts for approx 8hrs then we go back to the beginning.
Is there an easy fix for this ?
It’s the 2nd of this type of fridge we’ve had – the 1st sprung a leak just inside the warranty and was replaced – this one’s out of warranty by a couple of months. are they known to be a bit unreliable ? I had an old Candy fridge/freezer for 10yrs with no problems then got this and don’t feel too confident about it – it was just right for the gap in the extremely small kitchen we’ve got and gives us enough storage for family of 5 !
Any help/advice much appreciated !Cheers
Steve

As an update: the temp in the fridge is consistantly 5-7degrees & -5 degrees in the freezer.
Why would the alarm keep sounding ???Does anyone have any suggestions that could help ???

The alarm is sounding because it needs to be at least -15 in the freezer to stop it.
I would suggest a total defrost for 48 hours and see if that improves it, if the problem recurs then it’s engineer time 😉

Thanks Dave – we’re trying to run down the food at the moment as we’d just got the weekly shop in when it started 🙁
I’ll give it a go and come here again should I need an engineer. As an aside – This is great site – I had to replace the element in my oven recently (2nd time in 2yrs) and it was at least a tenner cheaper than I paid out the last time,so I bought a spare for the next time !
Cheers

This problem is normally caused by either an open circuit defrost heater or the NTC sensors out of calibration, these fridges had a problem with the NTC not allowing the defrost cycle to kick in often enough.
Check the defrost heaters and if they are ok, change the NTC’sJune 28, 2005 at 10:56 pm #138875casius66

Hi SL
Thanks for the advice.
I’ve not opened up one of these before (I’m into telecoms by trade-so I’m ok with multimeter/PSU’s/PCB’s etc…) – I’m assuming the defrost heater is the bit above the freezer (as you open the door and remove the screws it drops down when pulled forward) – how would I go about testing this ? I’ve not pulled it right out yet.If this is then OK where are the NTC’s ?
Thanks
Steve

The defrost heater wraps around the evaporator in the roof section, the NTCs are also in this section, one is at the front and the other is pushed into the back of the evaporator.

Finally got an engineer out and diagnosed faulty condenser. As it’s only 18mths old and is the 2nd one we’ve had as 1st one was replaced just inside 12mths (with a lot of resistance from some very rude Zanussi “customer care” people) I’m not prepared to pay out over £200 to have it go wrong again within months(& will NEVER buy their brand again).
I’ve now gone out and bought Miele seperate fridge & freezer (also Siemens dishwasher as the Hygena one we had died – but at least we got 3yrs out of it – as it was thrown in as a freebie with the kitchen units I’m happy enough with that !)Thanks again for the help/advice – hopefully won’t need anymore for some time !
PS If anyone wants the Zanussi for parts you’re welcome to come and get it – otherwise it’s going to the tip as soon as I get hold of Luton council…
