KeymasterSorry – got wrong model on previous post
we have noticed that over the last couple of months the freezer part of our machine is not quite cold enough. it takes all day to freeze ice cubes when it used to take a couple of hours. ice cream goes soft too
it’s about 4/5 years old.
does it just need regassing or is it thermostat?June 19, 2005 at 9:12 am #138991Del

Hi 4bex,
before any of the lads can help you there are a few questions we need answered
1) Is your fridge freezer “the frost free type”
2) What setting have you got the thermostat set to
3) Do you use the fast freeze switch for prolonged periods of time.
4) If your appliance is frost free check that it is not overfilled thereby restricting the air flow around the freezer.
5) Are the doors closing fully and are the door seals making full and complete contact.
6) Have you tried (once the food is removed to alternative storage) totally defrosting the appliance over a 24 hour period switched off with the doors open and then resetting it at a moderate setting approx setting 3 on most appliances without using the fast freeze.
Might also be a good idea to have some towels down on the floor to soak up any excess defrost water.
give answers to 1,2,3,4,5 and try step 6 if all fails
having tried step 6 get back to us so we can take the fault diagnosis further.
Regards Del

thanks, i’ll answer points
1. it is frost free
2. we have had to run at 5 or 6
3. no fast freeze switch on this model
4. definitely not overfilled
5. doors and seals are fine
6. have not tried this yet but did the followinf this morning –switched off, took out freezer drawers, removed back wall of freezer compartment.
coils had frost on them on but only in the middle of the top three bars.
switched the fridge on to check the fan runs. this was o.k. but noticed that the ice on the coils started to melt rapidly. once this had gone I switched off, replaced back wal and then switched back on
I have just noticed that some ice cubes in the fast freeze tray are now meltingJune 19, 2005 at 1:55 pm #138993admin

Thanks Del,
just spoke to my wife regarding this again and she said that she reckons she used to hear the fridge ticking when she was in the kitchen alot preparing food for our baby,
we moved house 8 months ago (I kept the f/f upright at all times!)
she doesnt’ think she has heard that ticking at all for a couple of monthsSo it sounds very much like defrost timer at the moment
do you know how much defrost timer is for this model?many thanks again

Right I would strongly advise step 6 because if the appliance has been run at too high a setting.
what happens is that the evaporator becomes blocked with ice and air needs to pass freely between the internal fins of the evaporator to become super chilled so that it can then blow over the food in the freezer compartment to keep it frozen. If after you have completed step 6 it still does’nt work correctly then we are talking about a service call from a refigeration engineer.

sorry we must have been typing at the same time when you posted your third message.
Yes a faulty defrost timer could cause the same symptoms you have reported in so much that the appliance does not go into defrost mode.
I would still try step 6 first though and if that does’nt work then just call in at SHOP@ here on UKW and Dave Conway will find you the part no. and price I’m sure he will be able to supply it as well, if required. 😉
