ParticipantHi folks,
Any pointers would be great!
So I have an Indesit IFW 6230 IX electric oven that keeps tripping the RCD circuit.
https://parts.indesit.co.uk/ifw6230ix-759991027810/p
It will stay on for a few minutes then the breaker is thrown. Initially I thought wiring degraded/earthing but other appliances are fine on that circuit. So the oven. I used a ohmeter/continuity test on the 2 elements, upper and lower. As the thermolimiter probe produce a buzz and neither the two elements did, I assumed the elements were blown, bought 2 replacements. Now, I’m not too sure that’s the issue as there is resistance of about 35 ohms in them. Not a great electrician but I guess if there’s resistance the circuit isn’t blown? Not having the continuity buzz on the elements threw me.I’ve tested a few other components, light, thermostat etc, there is resistance.
Taking the top off there’s a fan assembly and sensor. Neither have resistance and the fan doesn’t engage immediately after switching on, not sure it should? The oven will stay on for a few mins then trip.
Do you think I’m on the right track?
Can’t include pics due to exceeded limit apparently. Thanks in advance.

ParticipantJust determined the two items I tested that didn’t give a resistance was the cooling fan assembly and cut in sensor; [h=1]CUT IN 50±5/40±5°C NO J00651415[/h]
Would that cause a cut out after a few mins?November 8, 2023 at 11:53 pm #488488electrofix
Moderatorcommon for faulty elements to trip when they get hot

Yeah, I’m just not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} certain my multimeter component testing is up to scratch!
I’ve put the top new one in and am testing if it’s stable…
I guess the cooling fan just comes on after the oven is switched off and then the cut out sensor tells it to switch off when the temp gets below 50°C…
Thanks for the reply….

Moderatorthe trip is responding to an earth fault
you should be testing on a high ohms scale from one of the element terminals to the metal body (chassis) of the appliance
you also need to disconnect both wires from the element being tested to stop false readings

ParticipantSaw some scorching on the earth lead to the top element, also on the insulation fibre. Cleaned terminal and using a new element.
Think the cooling fan is blown though from all the tripping and current surges. Doesn’t come on atm but the casing is off, just for now, so it shouldn’t overheat.
New fan is £85

Moderatorscorching on earth cable is just fat from cooking process so not a problem
cooling fan is conntrolled by a thermostat so if its not working it could be the stat or the fan but if it was not working it would trip overheat stat ant the unit would turn off
none of this would make it trip

ParticipantHi,
The cable is outside the oven so it’s impossible for fat to get on it.
The Stat, thermolimiter and cut in sensor all work. The cooling fan is dead.
Switches are fine too. The insulation fibre was burnt near the element earth and the spade connector was carbon scorched.
It’s not overheating atm as I have it on quite a cool heat and no chasis on.
Think I’ll buy a fan and check that out…

Moderatorits still fat from the cooking process leaking out and contaminating the earth cable. its is not burning, earth cables never do as there is no current flowing through them

Moderatorhave a careful look at the fan
i have often had coils on this type of motor go open because the wires snap where they are soldered to the terminals
if yes you can resolder the wire and extend it if needed using short lengths of 15A fuse wire

Moderatorgen part number of the fan is C00385320
search on google get it a lot cheaper than £85
