Just curious, what appliances are you guys recommending to people just now, in each category, it seems to be getting harder to differentiate between them, with the bulk of them being, well, not great.

And when people say they don’t want anything Chinese it gets even harder.

Interesting topic, out of the loop for over six years now and not sure what I would buy myself in the future?:(

That was my thinking Jim, what the hell would I buy or even recommend to people that’s actually worth recommending at all?

Well having been a Bosch person for a long long time. we had the opportunity 2 years ago of a Whirlpool FSCR 8kg at a good price. I have to say it’s a very very well made machine with easy to use controls, it’s nice and quiet and has a nice large door opening.

Was having a look the other week in one of the local Currys and I wasn’t impressed with anything at all even the Miele didn’t do it for me.

The thing that is kinda niggling me is that there doesn’t seem to be anything out there, in any category, cooking, cooling, laundry, dish that stands out all that much.

I get asked a fair bit what I’d recommend and honestly, I struggle to come up with anything that is worth saying, “Yeah, go for that”.

Other than staying away from the dodgy own label stuff on Amazon etc it’s hard to recommend much.

My opinion, based on 18 years of all makes hands-on repair experience (laundry and dishwashing) plus 22 years of Miele ownership:

Miele is head and shoulders above everything else

    Bosch/Siemens and LG next

Electrolux group, Samsung and Smeg below that

Whirlpool group and Arcelik group following behind

    Hoover/Candy and Vestel last

This is based mainly on build quality and durability, but also taking into account performance

But not taking in possibly the most important factor for a large part of the buying public in today’s economic climate, COST.;)

Flipside to that is, consumer’s mainly don’t want to spend much so it’s a case of ” I want a cheap washing machine please.” But then they will lay out nearly a grand on a TV!!

Indeed, that is a decision for the customer – how far up the pyramid they can afford to go – which will depend on budget, current prices and how long an investment they want to make. In terms of value for money, I feel Samsung and Smeg are often over-rated, whereas Beko usually stands up well.

I tend to suggest if they want cheap as chips then buy on budget, otherwise go for Beko – I agree Samsung, Smeg et al are over rated, the trouble is there is nothing to differntiate between them, interesting no one here has mentioned EBAC

well never seen an EBAC and you can only comment on what you have seen
in theory they sound ok but since you don’t come across them you tend to forget they exist

We don’t because they have such a long warranty, I imagine. I mentioned Ebac to a customer a while ago, but then on reading the Trustpilot reviews, it appears people can wait a very long time for their machines to be looked at, so they probably don’t have enough engineers signed up. Also the out of balance system appears overly sensitive.

Ebac’s annual accounts are shown as over 12 months overdue on the Companies House website which might suggest they are in some kind if financial difficulty.
