ParticipantHi Guys
I’ve been trading for nearly 7 years now, and these past 5/6 months have been quiet, I know there’s ups and downs throughout the year but comparing earnings to previous years there is a decline. I’ve spoken to a few about this and there seems to be people experiencing the same, I’ve heard some guys even have to pack it in.
Im starting to worry that these parasite middle men companies, and most warranty/insurance work going to the likes of Pacifica and whirlpool is starting to kill off the independent trade.
Fortunately it is starting to pick up and go back to how it was, but just a worry for the future. Anyone else experience this?

KeymasterThe past few months virtually anyone I’ve spoken to has said it’s been quiet, across multiple industries as well and not just ours.

KeymasterThat is true but this year seems to have been a bit odd. Though there’s several things in play I suppose, the cost of living thing seems to be having an impact on a lot of things, interest rates, the election, sport, a bunch of things can all play into it and, even if it doesn’t affect some they get it into their heads not to spend money just in case.
We’ve seen it on the parts that people can live without, things like burners and so on that are replaced for cosmetic reasons; a lot of people just aren’t spending that as they don’t **HAVE** to spend it.
One online retailer I know of in the health/beauty type sector where it’s non-essentials reckons that they are taking 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the orders that they usually would across Europe so for some it’s grim. And they reckon the same, it’s just people reining it in due to all that’s going on.
One of the big ones I hear cited is interest rates as people are paying way more for mortgages, cars, stuff on tick and what they have on cards etc and it’s hurting.
Maybe we’ll all get a bounce after this election if there’s a change and people get a bit of a feel good factor and some optimism back.

I admire your optimism K and there is undoubtedly going to be a big change. I for one fear a massive increase in stealth taxes that will heap further misery on a large portion of the populace.

KeymasterI don’t think that will happen as, we’re already taxed up more than ever. In my memory anyway.

ParticipantThis time of year is always quieter, I’ve just looked at my accounts though and for April to July I’m well up this year compared to last year.

My data shows us down about 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} on jobs per month May -Jun compared with same period last year. We always see seasonal patterns of lighter workloads in the summer compared with autumn/winter. I’m optimistic we’ll still be up by end of the year.
Pacifica contacted us the other day. £60 inc VAT for completed jobs with £30 inc VAT surcharge for regas/drums. Feel like I’d be working against what I’m trying to achieve if I said yes. On the other hand I’ve got staff to pay and keep busy!

ParticipantI’m busier now than I have been for last 20 years:cool: got a couple of insurance companies that seem good to work for, hopefully it continues. I’m sure work will pick up for you all soon. Winters coming.
