ParticipantOur Miele W1724 is coming up to 13 years old and it’s led a very hard life. For a little while it’s not always been spinning properly and I can often see there are soap suds being flung around the drum as it tries to spin. The pump impeller is clear and spins. The drain pipe is also clear (has been replaced with another I had laying around). If I let out a small amount of the foamy water via the pump access as it tries to spin it’ll instantly decide to drain more water and then spin properly.
Having seen how much detergent the wife and kids have been using I reckon it’s built up to a point it foams even when we don’t add any, and even on the rinse cycle. I’ve tried running a number of 95deg washes with things like baking soda and washing machine cleaner with little success. Cosmetically the machine has seen better days. It’s noisy, rattles, sometimes the drum will bang into the sides (shock absorbers shot?) and looks like the drum might have dropped a little (worn springs?).
I know some Miele machines can go on for decades but this was one of their cheaper models, and given the issues I’m thinking it’s time to change it but I’ve read Miele don’t make them like they used to? Certainly the 2 year warranty seems ridiculously low compared to the 10 years they gave us on the current one. I’m tempted to go back to a mid range Bosch/Siemens as we had 2 of those prior, although they both ate motor brushes for breakfast.
Any advice gratefully received!

Moderatora lot of Miele pumps have a small breather tube system to get rid of suds lock/ air locks
it will be a very small tube coming vertically off the pump and it joins other tubes at the top
had a few blocked causing this sort of problem

ParticipantThanks, Dave. I had noticed a small hole towards the front of the pump housing, so I guess that’s probably it. How do you go about unblocking it? I’ve had the lid off a few times but the side panels have proved beyond me.

ParticipantIf it’s just an excess foam issue, a thorough clean and using less detergent might help.

ParticipantDave, you were absolutely correct, the breather pipe was a solid stinking mass of goo. I’ve unblocked it, reassembled and it’s just finished an empty test cycle to check for any leaks. Fingers crossed it’s sorted now but I won’t know for sure for a few days – I made sure we cleared all the dirty laundry before I started, just in case I broke it!
