    This is crazy…

The video is worth a watch/listen as well as there seems to be a growing call for controls on this sorta stuff.

I can’t find any valid reason for it.

All it does is make them more complex, harder to repair and more expensive if it’s an electronic issue.

I notice security patches for the software on these fridges ends 5 years from product launch. Fair enough for a purely technological item, I guess, but on a fridge, arguably a clear case of built-in obsolescence?

Jeez, it gets worse, I didn’t know about this one:

That is just nuts, whitegoods makers going the same way as the despised printer makers for doing the same “stuff”.

    Yep.

It’s actually very scary when you start to dig into this stuff, I was to research an article (here if you’re interested) about updates and stuff but OMG what a minefield it is. Some of the things that these large companies do is despicable treating customers as little more than commodities to be milked for as much cash as possible.

I read some of it and cant help but think that if most small businesses tried some of the stunts they do we’d get locked up or at the least be treated like pariahs by customers.

I digress, the point is that the Right To Repair thing insofar as we’ve seen it thus far with trying to get test and tech info is just the tip of the iceberg from a consumer perspective and, we’re all consumers. And, all being shafted to some degree or another.
