ParticipantI was chatting the other day with Ken and just reminiscing about how far above our weight we punched with the conferences , but also about just how exhausting they were, so if we are doing a reboot why not strip it back to what it was i.e a meeting for engineers?
How many of us remember the smaller meet ups?October 19, 2025 at 11:42 pm #493969Steven
ParticipantYes that seems to be a long time ago now! My first experience was sibson think the millers pub? Where it all began wasnt it? Drunken idea to set the seed for trade association for whitegoods trade. With only a handfull of engineers, generally there for a whinge and moan about our trade suppliers and no real support from manufactures which is still the same now but we set out to try and shake up the status quo and prove to some we could make change soon becaming something much more than even we thought we could acheive with over 60 members. As you said Lawrence punching way above our weight. Sibson then became too small a venue. Moving to Hilton coventry and then eventually to the BT conference centre, it was hard work organising these events with just a handfull of us. We are still here allbeit been very quiet since lock down which presented everyone with some tough decisions. Priorities had to be made to look after number one! The engineers meeting maybe the way to go back too. Back to our roots just a gathering to share stories and have a moan the way it was

KeymasterMy idea was to do a sorta engineers only meeting in Feb at Yarnfield as it’s fairly central and cheap.

KeymasterI wasn’t thinking to invite any of them, if they turn up fair enough but what I wasn’t wanting to do was the full on, blown up meeting with stands, presentations and so on.
The problem with that is that it takes months to organise and prepare for and is a shitload of work/hassle.
The intent here was more of a social thing and to get a sense of what the troops want us to have a go at, if anything.

KeymasterYeah something like that.
The other huge problem that especially Lawrence and I have is, when it’s the big full blown thing you end up like a headless chicken and not getting to speak to people in any depth. It’s a mad whirlwind of chaos, the first peace you get is when you get back in the car to go home.
