ModeratorNot a surprise to some of you, but after a year or so of hard thinking I decided to close down the shop and join the one man bands(almost). My shop lease was up in August and a rent rise would have been inevitable. Staff retiring as well as my well publicised decision to give up retailing appliances left the shop rather redundent other than use as an office and a spares counter which cost more to staff (with a knowledgable person)than it took in £££. I also found myself shop bound rather than doing what I do best, ie, working in peoples houses.
I am going to move my office into my house and my one remaining staff member is to carry out her work at her home via call divertion. I also intend to carry on and increase spare’s mail order and hey, maybe even get time to see the kids sometime.
I will need to shed some work as well but want to continue with Smeg and MFI and of course UKW E jobs as well as most of the cash jobs that have always been the major part of my business. This shop has been an institution in Bishops Stortford and I am preparing myself for the flak when the news gets out. I did feel that some people regard us as somekind of charitable public service. I know there is no way back after this and only time will tell if I will reget it, but as of now, I have just had enough…and need a change.

I wondered if or when you’d do this Mark.
It’s sad indeed to have to take that sort of decision but if it’s any consolation you’ll probably look back in a year and wonder why you didn’t do it ten years ago. We hope at least as that’s the usual outcome.

Not an easy decision I’m sure but I hope it all works out for you 😀

All the best Mark……
having moved back to working from home I can assure you you’ll love it when your on the phone, with the kids scrapping in the background, the dog barking and the wife screaming “be quite your dads on the phone” 😆

You’ll be quids in on the deal and wonder why you had’nt done it years ago Mark. Besides you will now have even better control of your outgoings knowing you have released a millstone from around your neck so to speak.
I hated the years I was a ‘engineer cum shopkeeper’ open 48 hours a week just to serve those herberts that came in wanting something for bugger all!
I wish you continued success and enjoy the freedom of a better lifestyle you can easily build on simply by working from home.
Best of luck! 😀

ParticipantYour’e right martin.
3 ways to increase your profit:
Charge more
Work more
Reduce overheadsPremises are a burden and then the additional cost of staffing, stocking and servicing them.
We are not here to save the world.
Enjoy your new found freedom Mark

All the best Mark ! 😉 I’m sure you’ve thought this through.
Try not to get too upset when some daft bugger comes calling round your house at 10.00 pm on a friday night, asking for a drive belt for a hotpoint washer 😆Del
