ParticipantHi there – hoping someone can give me an opinion and or advice on this.
I have a ten year old Hotpoint 8570 Fridge Freezer. It’s a frost free model. THere might be a temperature problem with the freezer.
A while back we noticed that ice cream was staying a little soft, a temperature check gives a reading of between – 11 and -14 C.
The seal is fine, the back of the unit is clear.
The red high temperature warning light works but isn’t coming on.
My questions are:
Is the temperature too high – ie do I really have a problem?
If so what might be the most likely cause?
Is it worth calling out an engineer (ie is it something he could easily tweak without it costing me an arm and a leg) or should I buy a new Fridge Freezer?
thanks in advance –
Dave Clarke

Could be a question of performance…and at 10 years on R134a its likely to need looking at.
Regas and new filter may well sort it for you, however a system engineer will advise once he’s hooked up to the system where he can see its performance reflected on his pressure guages.
You won’t get this for free, but it will allow you to arrive at the correct decision.
Try the repairs@ module to see if we have a repairer registered with us in your location

Thanks kevin.
Your repairs section doesn’t show an engineer in my area, but perhaps I’ll just try one of my local service engineers from Yellow Pages.
By the way – any idea roughly what the procedure you mentioned might cost?

hi,
difficult to say what your costs might be…….but I would charge £47.00 to advise you its not worth repairing, this would include me connecting up to your system to see whats what.
A regas with filter if its that simple around £65.00 + vat.
Hope that helps.

KevinOh yes, it does – thanks Kevin.
so – let’s see, wer’re talking about 50 quid for a check plus 75 quid if it’s a regas that’s 125. Or 50 quid to tell me it’s not fixable or too costly to repair. I’m starting to think I might as well ditch it and buy a new one. Is that what you’d do in my place?
By the way – does my -11 temperature mean the freezer is unsafe to use now?
THanks again – Dave

Sorry here as I might be stating the obvious but have you tried defrosting your freezer??? I also have a frost free one and had the same problem with ice cream. I was lucky enough to just switch it off and leave it for over 24hrs to defrost.
Wouldn’t like to think you were going to pay a lot of money for something simple.Good luck with it anyway…
