KeymasterI own a Hotpoint 9326 Tumble Dryer and up until recently has worked through six loads a day for about 15 years, but now it has become ever so noisy, when turning clockwise it screeches and when turning anti-clockwise it grinds, and when I first start a load, the drum shudders like it is struggling to turn this happens for about a minute then the screeching and grinding starts.
Can you diagnose why it screeches/grinds and shudders?
Thanks 😀 🙂 😀

Hey Washerman, don’t be so defeative 🙂
Most likely drum bearings and spider gone, and if you love the dear onld thing then get it fixed, You’ll be looking at around £100 or so when you consider the average life of a new machine it’s worth doing if the rest is in relativly goos condition.
Get them to check the motor and change the brushes at the same time, if you look in the repairs@ section on the left hand side, you will find a nice chap in your area who will be happy to sort it out for you.
Hope it helpsJuly 6, 2005 at 7:57 pm #140610Penguin45

Oi! Pat ! Tumble Dryer! 😀
Screeching noises can be the tension pulleys underneath, grinding noises indicate that the support pads at the front of the drum have worn through and it’s now running metal on metal. Providing this is corrected early it’s not too big a problem.
Hope that’s a bit clearer,
Regards,

Unlikely to be front bearing pads as such, the felt seal does fail but rarely causes noise, this machine has a plastic duct similar to the TDL modification, so you wont get metal on metal. Jockey pulleys are the most likely cause, but this machine was also prone to dampness building up in the internal exhaust which eventually damages the motor bearings. It is possible, but hardly worth it to change these bearings ( not a DIY job)

Jockey pulleys are quite cheap, always have both replaced at the same time. Motor bearings are also not expensive, I have replaced them in the past but it is fairly awkward. Complete motor would be too expensive.
