I have a 6 year old Scandinova FF6745D fridge freezer. The freezer section is working fine but the fridge suddenly stopped working (the thermometer showed the temperature to be +20).

We at first hoped that we must have not closed the door properly but it didn’t get back to normal and it now varies between around +18 and +32 (presumably depending on room temperature).

Comet said (based on our description) that it probably needed a new compressor (any ideas if this is the case?) and if so it would cost around £160 including labour but that it might be something else so they couldn’t guarantee it could be fixed for £160. We were in a bit of a panic, thinking the freezer might fail as well, so we bought a new fridge freezer. The freezer still seems to work though.

Does the failure of the fridge suggest that the freezer is likely to fail too? Can I move the unit to the garage and use it a freezer only (ie. ignore the fridge section) or is it even more likely to break down out there? I heard that fridges can’t be used in a garage but freezers can depending on the specification.

Hope someone can advise me. Thanks.

It’s hard to tell on this model I’m afraid, Scandinova is Comet’s own brand (or one of them) and they buy the units in from various places and get them badged with the brand name.

This one I don’t recognise and even Comet’s own spares website doesn’t many clues apart from the fact it’s frost free etc…

It may just be a fan motor packed up or the defrost function is faulty stopping cold air reaching the fridge.

I assume it’s now well and truly defrosted, try it now and see what happens, my guess is it will work perfectly for a period then the fridge will not function correctly again, which indicates a defrost problem.

Let us know how it goes 🙂

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the very prompt reply. That’s very interesting about Scandinova being a Comet own-brand. When I bought the fridge/freezer 6 years ago, I mentioned to the guy that I had never heard of Scandinova and he gave me some nonsense about the Scandinova company and the quality of their goods etc. Doesn’t really matter because I have been very happy with it for 6 years.

I’m not going to attempt to have the fridge section repaired. However, since the freezer section is still working, we are still interested in the idea of keeping the unit in the garage to use as a freezer only, since we were looking to buy a freezer for the garage anyway and have now blown that budget buying a replacement fridge/freezer for the house. Since the freezer section seems to have a separate compressor from the fridge section, do you think it can be used in a garage or is it too risky? I have the manual but it doesn’t mention use in outbuildings at all (whether a yes or a no) whereas my new Hotpoint manual says not to use the Hotpoint fridfe/freezerit in outbuildings. I don’t really want to stock the Scandinova up with food if you think it’s not a good idea to use it in a garage – I might as well let the council take it away for recycling.

    Thanks again.

If it has twin compressors then it’s quite likely it’s just the fridge thermostat that has failed but as you’ve replaced it now….

Switch the fridge off as the freezer runs independantly 😉
