ParticipantThere is thick ice forming on the plate at the back of the fridge.
The drainhole and channel are clear, the light switches off when the door closes and there are no obstructions around the door area.
The temperature only gets to +5 after the door being closed all night then in daytime use rises to +9-+10.
The freezer works fine.
Any input greatly received,
Thanks.July 27, 2005 at 2:26 pm #143308Martin

Most likely the Defrost Heater (Part No: 2115356004) is not operating then I guess.
A total defrosting is called for I reckon, then switch back on and carefully check the state of the evaporator from time to time. If ice continues to build up with no sign of any defrosting taking place, then a new Heater will need to be fitted.

Hi, my Zanussi had a similar problem (i.e. compressor always running, low fridge temp, freezer fine) and it was the heater timer that was sticking. This caused the condenser to ice up and reduce air flow. Very simple job of manually turning it using a screwdriver through the purpose-made hole in its housing. It seems to be freed up but I guess may need a new one at some point (cheap).
One clue was that it started making a constant buzzing noise a couple of days beforehand.

I defosted the fridge and it took about ten days before the ice built up heavily on the back plate.
Any more suggestions would be most helpful.

It may be the defrost heater as Martin suggested, also check the door seal for wear or damage as warm/moist air may be entering.
Please disregard the timer remarks, although usefull (thanks chazzer) your model (ER7946) does not have one 😉

ParticipantThe problem could be that you are checking the air temperature, and as it seems too warm you have turned the thermostat up high to try and compensate. In the warm weather the fridge cannot reach the max temp and so runns constantly and builds up with ice. Try turning the thermostat back to 2 (10 being the coldest) and then check the temperature with the thermometer placed in a glass of water situated on the bottom glass shelf over a 24 hour period. This will give you the average temperature and will not go up and dpwn as you start using the fridge more during the day.
