ParticipantThe Office of Fair Trading and trading standards services across the country continue to receive hundreds of complaints from businesses about sales tactics of some telesales companies, particularly sales staff making false claims about links to emergency services or charitable organisations.
There is also concern that false claims are being made that businesses have already agreed to buy advertising space and subjected to demands for payment when no such agreements have taken place.
Legitimate companies do exist, but reduce the risks of falling for cold call scams by following these tips:
* Don’t take unsolicited calls when you are busy and can’t give the salesman your full attention.
* Don’t agree to something on the phone just to get rid of a persistent caller – legally binding agreements can be made over the phone.
* Don’t be pressurised into paying for services you didn’t agree to : if you are threatened with debt collectors or credit black-listing, remember that ultimately only a court can decide whether you are liable to pay and disputes with another business will not necessarily affect your credit rating.

Just had one of those ‘European City Directories’ yesterday. Not had one for a while, the one that looks a bit like an invoice, sent out ot catch overworked or unatentive accounts departments into paying several hundred pounds for nothing. 👿

ParticipantHi, i am surprised that this problem was highlighted in 2005 but if there has been recent threads I cant see them.
Am I alone in receiving the “your warranty is up on your washing machine” phone calls. If I have a spare 5 minutes I play along.
they have nationwide coverage with university certified engineers, they will give me a warranty on my maserati washing machine, they will give me a new one if I put a hammer through the door.It doesnt matter if it is not actually working and doesnt matter if its a 40 year old keymatic . £200 for 3 years free new for old if they cant fix it sounds like a bargain to me.October 17, 2020 at 6:33 pm #143345kwatt
KeymasterSomething tells me there was some sarcasm in that last post. 😉
