KeymasterI have a very strange gas/chemical smell coming from both my fridge & freezer section. Can i still eat the food? Is it dangerous to keep sticking my head in & sniffing it?!! Do i have to buy a new one or can it be repaired? Any ideas gratefully received!! 😥

😯 Switch it off please straight away until we can identify the problem !!!
Some refrigeration has R600A gas in the system which is highly flammable. Until we can rule that out, treat this as you would a household gas leak and open windows to ventilate, don’t smoke etc.
Have you accidently punctured any pipework by “scraping” ice off from anywhere possibly ? If there is an internal system leak the unit will stop working very soon, have you noticed a rise in temperature ?
Can you find the model number from the rating plate also please, on the same label will be the gas type, it will either be R600A or R134A.
It may not be any of the above of course but as we can’t smell it I’d like to ensure your safety and treat with caution.
Dave.

😳 Have now switched it off. I haven’t done anything to the pipes & there is no ice to scrape away as it’s frost free. I just noticed a strange smell yesterday morning & hoped it would go away. Obviously it hasn’t & now i’m starting to worry!
The model number is: ERF-331MM
The gas type is: R134A
Do i need to leave it switched off overnight?

Do i need to leave it switched off overnight? No, you can switch it back on now, R134A isn’t flammable 😀
I can’t explain the smell though to be honest, keep an eye on the actual temperature over the next day or so, if it starts to rise there may be an internal leak which will mean a new fridge/freezer 🙁
No need to worry, my main concern was R600A escaping 😀
If you are concerned, then please call an engineer to check the unit for you, try Repairs@

Check that all your seal are nice & clean. Mould and decaying food waste can give off some peculiar odours.
Have you cleaned your fridge recently with anything particularly caustic? The plasticisers in many of these seals don’t take at all well to strong alkaline/base compounds and can degrade upon contact releasing unpleasant smells as a bonus.
