ParticipantYesterday, I fitted a stat kit to a Creda condenser dryer… Normal problem, the condenser was full of fluff.
Whilst cleaning the condenser and filter and noticed a white deposit in the drum but I didn’t pay a lot of attention. I then continued to test the machine. I also had a washing machine in the same room to repair so I left the dryer running to give it a good test.
BANG! … a minute later the damn thing exploded in a ball of flame! Smoke everywhere! Luckily the customer and I were able to get the machine out the back door… still flaming! After a quick change of underpants I just had to investigate what had happened.
It turned out that the machine had not been working for six weeks and the white deposit was white spirit and gloss paint! The washing machine had not been working for ages and the customer’s overalls and dust sheets had been hand washed (badly) and put in the dryer to dry still soaking wet.
I tried a test on the fluff that I had taken from the condenser. I touched it with a lighted match and it went up like a roman candle!!!
It just goes to prove how important it is to fully test an appliance following a repair. Had I walked away without testing it I would have had a house fire to add to my stories!!!

ParticipantI once went to a brand new Tumbler that the irate customer was threatening to dump in their front garden..she claimed that it had put oil all over her husbands and sons best shirts and cost her hundreds of pounds, she was very very annoyed and I was on the recieving end, but she was relieved to find that her lovely little girl had put a big black wax crayon in the tub….I mean, I was relieved..she was livid, and put my spare emergency undies back in the van…I think that she may have put the child up for adoption..lol

In the old days when back panels and lids were all metal it was very hard for a fire not to be self contained. Are the common lids in machines fire resistant these days?

A few years ago I had to find out why a Zanussi tumble dryer had caught fire and destroyed a kitchen, the customer was going to sue Zanussi for a new £15,000 kitchen
But when I looked inside the burnt out clothes in the drum to my joy I found what left of a box of matches her husband had left them in his pocket they had been through a wash and then into the dryer, should have seen the customers face when I showed her Do you blame the husband for leaving them in there, or her for not checking his pockets. I bet he got the blame its always my fault in my house
