KeymasterHi,
My Zanussi washing machine (not sure where to find model number) is making a horrible sort of metallic scratchy noise when you turn the drum. It’s working okay but the noise is so bad it woke us up when the spin started and our bedroom’s on the other side of the house!
It sounds as if something metal (a coin, for instance) might have got in somewhere where it shouldn’t be but I don’t know if this is possible or not.
Is there anything I can do to see what it might be or does this sound like a job for the experts?
If you have any suggestions as to where to look for the model number then I’ll get it for you.
Thanks in advance,

It is possible and it’s almost certainly an underwire out of a bra by the sound of it.
Try shining a torch through the holes, you should be able to see it. Removing it is another matter though. If it is a bra wire, you may be able to position it underneath the drum in such a way you can pull it back through one of the holes.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your response. I’ve had a look but I can’t see anything and I know it’s not a bra wire because none of mine have them and I’m the only bra-wearer in the household.
Just in case it’s any further help, I found the model number which is FLS 1185QW and the serial number is 026 00318.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,

I guess it will be something caught between the front edge of the inner drum and the outer plastic drum 🙁
Due to the large gap between inner and outer drum adjacent to the grey door seal, things like nails and screws out of pockets get nicely lodged in this area. The only solution is to dismantle the machine and extract the offending item 🙁
(If you also find fine greyish plastic (almost like wood shavings) in the drain filter, that is a dead giveaway that is your problem as the drum rotates it shaves off bits off the outer drum 😯 )

Thanks for that, Martin.
Couldn’t quite face dismantling the machine as had another one sitting in the garage (the one we’re using came with the house and the one in the garage came from our old house and was waiting for our utility room to be built).
Now need to decide whether to dismantle the Zanussi to see if I can find anything or quite what to do with it. Seems a bit of a shame to just throw it away seeing as it’s working apart from that but not sure if anyone would want it.
