the pump housing on my bosch dishwasher (6 years old) needed replacing. so i bought and fitted new pump housing. now dishwasher smells of burning and motor gets very hot (motor is directly attached to pump housing). i have refitted pump housing not screwing it on so tight and it doesnt seem to smell as much – very difficult to say. any suggestions why motor is getting so hot? is it possible that the action of pumping will make pump housing self tighten on motor shaft. again if so what can i do? many thanks for any help. i know nothing about the dishwasher.

for info: the motor gets quite hot to touch and makes it difficult to turn (by hand).

overheating bearing in the pump motor, perhaps. Whilst the motor does get hot during use it should not run hot enough to smell.
Try checking that the rear and front bearings are in line along the rotor by adjusting the bolts that fasten the front half to the rear half of the motor body.
These do have to be tight but equally so to stop distotion from front to back.

thanks but seems to be inline ok. also smell only started yesterday when i fitted new pump housing – previous 6 years smell free. so i surmise its something to do with fitting housing. could i try putting a washer on shaft between motor and pump housing? many thanks

Why was the pump housing replaced in the first place ?
If it was leaking it has almost certainly damaged the bearing/bush on that end of the motor.
When assembled check how freely it rotates, it should be fairly free with a little resistance but not hard to turn.

no pump housing didnt leak – the “fins” seperated from the backing plate and so stopped pumping. so no water on motor ,which when cool spins freely. when hot is stiffer to turn. smell seems to be getting less intense and now mainly noticeable on drying bit of program when finished washing – last 10 mins . although to be fair that is when most of work has been done by motor and with hot water i suppose it must get up to a reasonable temp anyway. could it be that the pump housing was tight within itself and hence was more work to turn and hence hot motor? just guessing. any more suggestions. thanks for all replies thus far

It’s hard to tell really without actually having it in my hand.
Is there a local repair shop you could take it to that may be able to throw some light on it ?

only an expensive one and the cost of repairing dishwashers is close on buying a new one! but i can realistically only conclude it has something to do with new pump housing

Can I butt in a this point (before you switch it on again – please!) and ask exactly what model of machine are we talking about here? (full number including FD number please)
I might be able to shed further light before you cook the windings 😉
