Hello – after a bit of advice please! My fridge freezer is one year and three weeks old and the fridge has stopped working. The freezer is fine, but showing that it is trying to warm up, and the fridge shows it is trying to cool down. Had an engineer out (free, thankfully, due to Barclaycard extended warranty!!! Yippee!) and he said it might need regassing.

Hotpoint couldn’t get an engineer out for another week so we managed to get them to agree to scrap it so another is arriving on Tuesday. Anyway – is it worth getting my broken one repaired, or would anyone like it for spares as I really don’t want to bin it if someone might find a use for it! Thank you!

Obvious question here – why didn’t the engineer regas the appliance whilst he was there? Not sure what area you are in, but we would charge about £50 for a regas in Lincolnshire

Hi, thanks for your reply. The engineer couldn’t regas it because he was the first line repair and the gas engineer for our area is sick. After a lot of hassle Hotpoint agreed to write it off and give us a new one instead as we’d have had to wait ages for someone to fix it. We’re in Tidworth – on the Wiltshire/Hampshire border. Like I’ve said, I don’t really want to bin it as it’s only a year old, so do you think it would be economical to repair it and sell it? The engineer actually said he thought it was a “system blockage” hence the need to regas.

If it has a system blockage it may not be repairable.

Have a look at repairs@ on the main menu, there may be an independant engineer who can visit and advise on the best course of action 😀

Thanks again for your reply. I might just cut my losses (entire contents of fridge after a major Tesco’s shop!!! 😡 ) and pay the council £12 to take it away. Seems a bit of a waste though as the freezer still works. Don’t really want to pay an engineer just to be told it’s not repairable, especially as it’s not costing me anything for the replacement. Just didn’t want to throw it away as it seems such a waste!!!

It is a waste as I don’t think the diagnosis is correct to be honest, I may be wrong of course as it can happen 😉

Phone around the local repair guys and see if they want it or check the repairs@ module and ask via email if they would like it perhaps ?

Hotpoint may actaully want it back of course on Tuesday when they deliver the new one

    Re: Hotpoint FFA90 frost free

I think the problem may be a blockage in the air duct from freezer to fridge either that a faulty baffle or again the evaporator fan is jammed and not circulating cool air up to fridge, there was a mod on these about 18 months ago to cure ice build up around fan area if it is an older machine that would possibly all it req’s,

    Re: Hotpoint FFA90 frost free

When the first line engineer came out he removed the internal back plate of the freezer and defrosted it all with a hairdryer as initally he thought it was ice blocking the duct. The fan is still working – you can hear it turn off when the door is opened and the engineer did check the baffle wasn’t stuck. The fridge freezer didn’t bring up any fault codes either when the engineer checked it. That’s when he decided it must be a gassing problem, although the freezer is still working fine. I thought the fridge just got it’s cold air through a duct from the freezer so don’t really understand why it’s not working when the fan is. When my new one arrives I might try leaving it turned off for a couple of days incase there is ice further up the duct or something?? Apparently Hotpoint won’t take it away when they deliver the new one.
