i went to a call last week for a wp that we don’t normally work for.
anyway, the job was on an integrated washer.
what a nightmare, first getting it out, then struggling to put it back.
i’m sure we’ve all been there, you put it back and the cabinet door doesn’t line up, or it’s not exactly square with the other cupboard. the washer was also built up quite a lot too.
after finally getting it back in position, it left me quite thankful that i don’t do a lot of built in work and this got me thinking how lads in the trade that look at these all the time carry on.
do you insist that the appliance is out on the floor for you to look at?
or do you accept that the struggle to get it out and put it back is part of the job?

    Re: built in appliances

Accept the struggle and be grateful for the work is what I think. The good news being that they cannot simply buy a new one for £180 and are more likely to have a repair done at a proper rate. its very rare I have ever given up on getting one out, thick floor tiles in front of it is usually the case.
After doing a few thousand it becomes less daunting.

    Re: built in appliances

despite having attended many built in appliances over the years, i can honestly say i have never given up on one, not to mention been daunted by one.

the price of a built in appliance is academic when you’re working for a 3rd party for a fixed fee.

agreed, that if it’s a private job, the customer will more or less expect to pay a good price to have a repair, but if you’re looking at these appliances all the time for a work provider, on a fixed fee, how far do you go?
quite often, taking the thing out and re-installing is equal , in time, to the job itself.

so back to my original question, should we expect to be kitchen fitters as well as engineers?

MFI for one certainly expect you to remove and replace unless under special circumstances, but they pay a reasonable rate for it. Smeg, however dont pay enough but the majority of their work is fixed in situ, I find.
The only thing i never try to do is removing those canopy cooker hoods, I did it once with the glass balanced on my head but never again!

Indeed Mark, I also feel that many manufacturers don’t reward the efforts well enough although you put it ever so nicely in regard to Smeg. I doubt I could have been as tactful, the only saving grace is the chargeable work off the back of it.

SMEG is not that bad as they pay you to remove and agian to fit. I do not think any one else does that!

    Re: built in appliances

this is exactly what i was getting at.
should we be paid to remove and refit, or should we insist that the appliance is on the floor for us to inspect / work on and leave it there when we leave the job?
would it be unreasonable or churlish to suggest such a thing?
ok, if it’s a chargeable job, then you can obviously build the cost in to the job, as i have done many times, but on a fixed fee?

    Re: built in appliances

I queried this with Servast ,and was told that you should be able to remove the plinth and pull the machine out to work on it ,I have had a couple where I have requested the fitters come back and remove the appliance from the housing so I can repair then they refit to the housing ,The worst are dishwashers where the telescopic leg won’t work or floor tiles upto the feet , as for exchanging appliances in my experience Smeg have always issued a job to disconnect and then a subsequent job to re connect both at full rate although I have negotiated one off higher rates for odd one out ,When i was a Brandt agent I refused to do exchanges as they weren’t prepared to pay an appropriate fee
