I have a problem wih my Hotpoint FZ60A freezer which I hope someone can help me with. We have not noticed any problems until yesterday when we had to switch of the power to the freezer for 30 seconds. A couple of hours after switching power back on the freezer red light came on and I could not hear the compressor running but the fan was running. Switching to fast freeze put the orange light on but did not start the compressor. When the temperature rose further to about -5C the compressor started (with fast freeze switched off) and continued to run , dropping the temperature satisfactorily. 12 hrs later I checked the temperature with a thermometer and it was -25C and the compressor was still running (fast freeze was OFF). I then switched the power to the freezer off for 30 seconds again and when switched back on again the compressor did not restart but the fan ran. Switching on fast freeze only put the orange light on, no compressor.
The freezer now appears to be controlling (poorly) between -25C and
-5C. Does this freezer use a thermostat or electronic control? Assuming that I need to replace the thermomstat, which model do I need?
The thing that puzzles me if it is a thermomstat problem is why the fast freeze switch does not overide this and start the compressor.

    Can anyone help please?

    Thanks.

This unit is electronically controlled and has no thermostat as such but is controlled by thermistors and the electronics.

I think switching it off and back on again within the 30 seconds may have caused the error.

Switch the whole thing off and defrost it completely for 48 hours and try that, let us know the outcome please 🙂

    Re: Hotpoint FZ60A- Temperature Control

    Thanks for the info. Dave,
I did as you suggested. Defrost did not result in very much water therefore the condenser was not iced (unlike a couple of years ago when it was a block of ice).
After switching back on it cooled down ok and stayed around -18 C. However, the temperature then varied wildly again, e.g. -18C in the morning, then left all day closed up and when checked again in the evening it was -25C (compressor still running) but the max /min thermometer I used showed it had been up to a temperature of -5C sometime during the day ( with the door closed).
Should the temperature control stop and start the compressor as it appears to run all the time even when at -25C?
Any more ideas on what is wrong?
    Thanks.

    Re: Hotpoint FZ60A- Temperature Control

The good news is that it can reach such a low temperature indicating the system is OK 🙂

On closer inspection, the temperature control is actually thermostatic and not electronic, the module only holds the front neon indicators. Hotpoint pictures 😉

Thermostat (the likely cause) is part number 2600091 at £22.58 inc VAT and post.

If you want one ordered, I can get it for you, an email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk please.

    Re: Hotpoint FZ60A- Temperature Control

    Hi
When you switch any refrigeration appliance off , you should leave it for at least 10mins before switching on again as the compressor will not start until start device has cooled down and pressures in system have equalised.

    Re: Hotpoint FZ60A- Temperature Control

    Thanks for the info Mike,

That looks to explain the non starting after the momentary switch off but under those circumstances would the freezer normally warm right up to the alarm temperature before the start device had cooled down and allowed a start?

    Re: Hotpoint FZ60A- Temperature Control

    Dave,

Received the new thermostat promptly, thanks.

Fitted it and now have temperature control again. The compressor now actually switches off at -20 C and back on around -18C. Therefore, looks to have solved the problem.

    Thanks again

    Good news Nigel

Thanks for letting us know the outcome.
