I have a 5 yr old Hygena 8101 dishwasher that has recently developed a dangerous fault. I touched the open washer whilst touching the sink tap and got an electric shock. When I measured the voltage between the two, I found 125V ac. I originally thought there was a fault on the house wiring and that the coldwater pipe which is bonded to earth may be touching a live cable somewhere, but I now think differently as the fault only exists when the dishwasher is switched on.
I have stripped the unit and found that when I remove the supply cable suppressor, the fault is no longer present. Is it possible for the suppressor to breakdown internally and put voltage onto the earth connection ?
Can I run the machine without the suppressor ? and if I cant can I order a new one through Whitegoods.
Any help appreciated, and direction if I’m going down the wrong track.

PS Checked the door wirng loom for any damage to insulation, but all seems fine.

You should have the plug and socket that supplies the appliance tested as there must be an earth problem for you to get a shock from the appliance. To do this properly you need to be proficient in the use of an instument called an earth loop impeadence tester.
this is a job for an approved electrician in all honesty.

Something that you can check for yourself is the earth connection in the plug.

If the machine is connected to an extension cable or a two way adapter, then that could be at fault.

Any appliance that is not earthed correctly is fundamentally dangerous and should not be used until the earth fault is repaired. Should the appliance develop a serious fault in the future it could kill someone rather than just blowing the fuse.:zap:

In theory the appliance will work without the suppressor but it is there for a purpose; to stop the appliance interfering with sensitive electronic equipment (including its own microprocessor in the timer unit) and should not be disconnected. The 125v reading is quite normal if the appliance is not earthed. Disconnecting the suppressor in this instance is not advisable as it is just covering the problem and not resolving it.
