ParticipantOur dishwasher developed several faults – sometimes it won’t start a cycle (press start & after split second a motor noise stops & then nothing). If it does start, the cycle doesn’t complete (stops well before the end) & normally leaves dirty water in the machine. We did have a SMEG engineer out (when under guarantee) & he advised the machine was fine (as there were no error messages), but this was a plumbing problem (it did work for nearly 2 years previously without probs?!?). We had to wait some time for a plumber, but after checking all drainage/water supplies etc, was told it was a machine prob. Several months had passed (new baby + house extension to deal with!!) & SMEG wouldn’t come out under guarantee as it had lapsed. Independent engineer came out & suggested the programmer is knackered & new one would be very very expensive & perhaps not worth replacing (buy Bosch instead?).
Can anyone help at all or suggest anything – don’t really want to replace whole machine. thanks in advanceSeptember 8, 2005 at 9:29 am #146879kwatt

Hi Steve,
The start problem does indeed sound suspicously like a timer problem to be fair and they’re not cheap. That said there are other things that could cause it and it is unusual for a timer to be an intermittent failure on these as they’re solid state devices.
The drain problem could well be a plumbing issue if the machine is installed to a spigot off the sink drain, that causes all sorts of issues and it sounds like it’s “locking off” on the airbreak. Basically the famed “E2” error.
I’d try to get someone that’s familiar with the machines to have a look if I were you as it’s not a job you really want to be doing yourself if you’re not sure, plus most of the Smeg guys wil have a timer they can slave in to test if required. 😉
Try Repairs@ and if you’ve no luck there give me a postal area and I’ll see who I can find.

Thanks for your reply.
Drainage wise, it is routed direct to a drain & doesn’t link to the sink drain at all. I may try swapping it with washing machine so it has completely diff water supplies & drainage supplies, but think it’s a longshot really.
I looked at Repairs@ & couldn’t find an engineer in the area. My postcode is KT17 1SY. Could you recommend someone?
Thanks, Steve
