ParticipantThought I would do a post on this as it might be helpful.
I had an elusive fault on a Zanussi FJ1254. Occasionally the machine would just throw a wobbler and hang – no error codes etc. Intermittant needle in the haystack problem (insert approprite cuss word here).
Turns out to be the mains filter. No obvious clues but i suspect that the suppressor was beginning to fail and introducing an occasional transient on the supply. As microcontroller circuits are very sensitive to a noisy supply the processor just hangs or resets with no apparant reason – (time for another naughty word or two).
Worth filing in the grey cells for future reference as this is not usually an obvious componant to suspect!

That’s interesting but there’s something that would be even more interesting. By what procedure did you diagnose the fault? Whatever that procedure is,I could have done with knowing it years ago.

It was’nt through any genius on my part. My last visit to this machine was to replace the mains filter which had spilled its guts.
Fixing this has also eliminated the other problem which is why i arrived at my conclusion

The thing that i don’t understand is that these modules in common with others use a small switched mode power supply based around a TOP209P IC, and i would’nt have thought that interference on the mains supply would get through onto the DC supply, but it seems that somehow it can.
maybe someone can explain how.

Cannot realy explain it, but I think I know whats going on in my head but I had a similar thing a while back on one of these that was caused by a burnt out mains plug and socket on a dishwasher that happened to be plugged into the other of the double wall socket as the washing machine. Only found that when I attempted to unplug the dishwasher and couldnt! Once I did, and plugged the washer into another socket it worked fine and still is AFAIK.
