Has anyone worked, or is working in the Greater Vancouver area on this forum? I am emigrating there from New Zealand in March, and am curious to find out what it is like. I already have a job with a great company to go to ( that was the easy part 😮 ), but I only have the people I know at the company to ask what is like, and they have been very honest about the differences I can expect. They only work on top-of-the-line appliances (in Canada), so this could have an effect on the type of client ( in my experience, more able to afford to pay the fee, but more likely to bitch and moan about it).
If anyone can help out, it would be great,

I know it’s no help but I wish I could step into your shoes in NZ. I have dreamed about emigrating to New Zealand for years and even got a job interview once. I don’t know if it is still the same now but at the time they allowed in 50,000 people a year from about a million or so that applied.

From ‘The Land of the Big White Cloud” to Vancouver where most of the clouds linger at street level. The weather in Vancouver varies in the extreme 365 days a year with rain being certain most days 🙁

Just be prepared for all the wrong guesses about your accent!

Well you missed out there Ross, could have done a swop with Phidom. Oh well you will just have to put up with being in Beautifull British Columbia rather than north east Scotland.

    Yours enviously.

Phidom, you should try again. They’re crying out for qualified tradesmen here, pay rates are going up all the time, there is plenty of work. Very rosey indeed.
The main reason I am going is it will be a great experience for the kids (and theres the $80k+ per yr 😀 , but thats beside the point……). Not cheap to do, but well worth it for the change.

Yep, lack of skilled manual labour seems a worldwide problem, in the so-called “developed” world at least as quite simply it doesn’t pay enough.

We’ve already had people from other countries looking for engineers and recently from NZ in another thread. I don’t think it’ll be the last time either from what I can gather of the worldwide labour situation.

Sadly, based on some of the rates on offer in this country and the cost of living here, we just cannot compete to retain skilled workers. Australia is openly advertising to “pinch” skilled people from other countries, the UK included. The figures aren’t huge at all for this, but it’s a concern and it also highlights to me that other industries or areas related can pay a lot more in salary than we can. In short, if some company either here or in another country wants to “buy” our engineers we’ve almost no chance of being able to compete.

We’ve already seen it happen oh so often with British Gas etc.

But best of luck with the new life in Canada Kiwi and I’m sure that, if quite a few of us had the chance, we’d be off to sunnier climes as well.

Having had a quick look at property prices, I don’t think I could afford to buy a place in NZ now. Even a building plot is about £70,000 although I know many people buy a ready made house and just plant it on a site. I will make further enquiries though.

    Re: working in Vancouver

Multiply your pound by 2.5 and you roughly get that in NZ dollars, you can get a nice detatched 3 bdrm house on a 1/4 acre section in a mid sized town for $200,000 NZD(about 70,000 sterling). Think about it!!! 🙂
