KeymasterOkay so it’s been a while since I started something in here, so I was sitting thinking that it was about time I stirred it a bit. 😉
What do you reckon the impact of curtailing the SPAM by insisting on registration has had?
IMO, there’s really been none, in fact if anything it’s increased the registrations in one day!
Comments invited.

Of course the registrations will increase – they can’t pose their question without…… It does imply that people take us seriously and want to ask us rather than others, which is re-assuring.
Touched on this once before I think – if it’s going to get busier, consider training up a couple of the Mods to speed the registration process.
Might be an idea to stick something on the front page though – “This is a Members Site – Please Sign Up”.

It had to come eventually we couldn’t go on spending half our time swatting spammers. The added advantage is that we can now boast of actual members rather than passing hit’s.
It is my opinion that once we reach the 5 million mark in a few weeks we will have proved the point that we have a very popular site from then on we need to start thinking more about the quality of the visits we recieve and the sign up will help us out there.

There is only one drawback that I know of after checking other sites that suffer from spammers as we do, it’s very easy to register with a hotmail etc addy and they will, but yes, I think we need to do this..

It seems to be working well now since the need for registration (although yesterday- Sat 10th- was dead all day 😕 ).
I wonder if we kept this up until the end of this month say, then re-established back to the old way to see if the spammers return ❓

KeymasterThey will return Martin, UKW has been posted on a shitload of spammer sites as it was open forums. As has been said, virtually every web forum on the net requires that you register before using it, I don’t see that us being any different will have any profound impact.

Well, I certainly don’t miss deleting spam at 0530 each morning…

KeymasterAnd has anyone noticed the slight increase in new user sign ups at all? 😉

Presumably the same now applies to the reviews section (registration required to add comments) ?
I found a spam one today by user “john”. Quickly deleted the post and removed john as a registered user.
He had some odd ozzy email address 😕
