My mothers Zanussi freezer is running continously and the compressor is very hot. The inside of the freezer is not icing up so is it the thermostat or the compressor itself.
If I switch it off and then on again the compressor stops for approximately 5 minutes. I have tested the thermostat when I have turned it off and then back on and it is on all the time but the compressor does not run until the time above elaspses.
    Can anyone Help me ❓

Re: Freezers compressor is running continuously

    Hi Ian,

    First things first

NO FRIDGE OR FREEZER SHOULD BE TURNED OFF AND ON IN QUICK SUCESSION !!!

There should be at least a ten minute gap between turning it off and then switching it back on again. Its a bit like putting your car in fifth gear and then trying to drive off. It will stall and so will you fridge if you turn it off and then straight back on.

    As to you original fault,

    1) first of all how old is the appliance
    2) are the door seals meeting the cabinet all round when you close the doors i.e. no gaps

If they are, then it could be that there is a loss of refrigerant or that the compressor has become weak.

Thanks for the reply, the freezer is approximately 14 years old. All the seals are in place and still flexible.
Does it look as the refrigerant is missing or the compressor is weak as my mother is becoming frantic and would like to spend my inheritance on a new one.
    Please give me some advice

I’d wager that the compressor is on it’s way out unless the machine has been knocked or transported recently. Whether or not it’s worth spending the money on at the age of it is a different question, but my advice would be that you’ve your money’s worth out a Zanussi at that age.
