ParticipantMy machine makes a dreadful noise, particularly on start up and reversal. I have isolated it to the twin impellor fan which is loose on the rotor shaft. I don’t know whether to lubricate it (get rid of the noise) or glue it. I cant work out how the fan is affixed to the shaft and at £120 i don’t really want to be too ham fisted. Should it be fixed firmly to the shaft or is it meant to be a loose inteference fit. Any help appreciated

Interference fit – not loose at all.
The fan is available separately at around £35, which while expensive, is a damn sight less than the motor assembly. P/no is 4812 361 18189.
An email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk for confirmned prices and ordering.

I would break it off to be honest as you’re replacing it, be careful not to damage or bend the motor shaft of course 😉
You could also try cutting it with a hacksaw but there’s a risk of “going too far”.

was going to cut off with a very fine saw as a last result, take your point about going too far. am worried that ill damage the fixing mechanism whatever it may be. i presume there must be something that stops it revolving on the shaft (maybe part of fan maybe part of shaft) and its that which i am afraid of damaging.
also point which occurred to me, if its the shaft thats damaged ie whatever has come adrift is part of the motor rather than the fan, buying a new fan wont help as ill be unable to fix it. at this point it becomes a new motor and hence scrap
the benifit of yr wisdom is much appreciated

Chazzer,
Its a plastic fan unit that snap fits onto a metal shaft. As Dave says, in order to fit a new Fan unit, one simply has to break the old one off! Nothing too physical required in doing that in all honesty. 😉
Thought I must admit that after reading these posts…… what the hell is an “Interference fit” anyway :con: That’s a new one on me for sure! 😕

Cracked it, not literally!! The shaft is splined all that has happened is that the (plastic) splines have worn off the fan, all that was required to get it off was to re align the small section of fan spline that remained (splines on fan are longer than splines on shaft) with the shaft spline and bingo off it came.
piece of P155
Thanks for all your help and a huge thank you from my wife who has lived with a semi mantled tumble dryer for 5 months

“Interference Fit”. On the tight side of an exact fit. May require reasonable force to join the parts together.
Glad you got it sorted Chazzer.

Yes, be careful fitting the new one, it does require quite a bit of “reasonable force” 😀
Email on the way Chazzer…
