ModeratorComplaint on the phone was that the machine was not washing and there was a burning smell when door was opened. My first guess was that the circulation pump had failed preventing the water from dousing the heater.
Called this morning and customer had thoughtfully pulled the machine out into the middle of the kitchen, still connected to all feeds. Switched onto main wash and it filled perfectly to normal level and washed fine, with both arms rotating freely. Drained and filled a couple of times seemingly OK. Tried it on the Rinse & Hold/Prewash. Filled then started to circulate, however this time it stopped to fill then circulate in short pulses as if the pressure switch was opening due to the suction of the pump. Not sure if this is something this machine does on prewash but it doesn’t do it on the normal wash programmes. I noticed that the filter assy was not fitted correctly and on removing it found some white, gunge around the bottom of the filter and a few lumps of the same on the right hand side of the sump. Could this have caused the machine to go into a wash/heat action without water?

IWMS problems I think 🙁
It’s normally best to fit the recommended Zanussi “kit” with water fill/level problems on these but blockages etc can sometimes be resolved.
PNC required for the correct kit though Jim 🙂

ParticipantDid you open the door on the dishwasher prior to it doing this bizare pulsing with the circ pump by any chance?

I suspect that the act of dragging the machine out may have allowed the machine to work again when I tried it. I normally try and run a dishwasher first before lugging it out, had many Hotpoint slimline dishwashers that suddenly worked when dragged out and tipped back. 😉
will give them a ring and get all the required info in case it happens again.

Opened the door several times whilst set on the main wash programmes to check on water level and spray arm rotation etc. It only did the fill/circulate, fill/circulate on the prewash for a short while then reverted to normal action. Just like a washer in which the clothes have absorbed some of the water or as used to happen in many old dishwashers when the circulation pump kicked in. Old Bosch/Hotpoint models of washers as well as dishwashers had a small air restrictor in the pressure hose to combat this.

Dear me, the forum is even slower than last night ATM.
Customer has just rung back. Machine set on normal wash, seems to do prewash OK then just after the detergent drawer is heard to open the motor stops, indicator light is still on, she thinks that the heater was working but didn’t leave it to long this time.

Yep, just perusing it now. nothing specific but I am now looking at service bulletin 2430 which mentions a mod to the pressure switch anti overflow function to elimintae ‘critical’ conditions that interupt the wash cycle.
What is the IWMS mod to which you referred in your earlier post?

Isn’t there a timer/relay thingy inside the door panel that pulses the wash motor on some models?

This was switching in short five second bursts between fill and wash not just pulsing the motor.
