ParticipantHi, I’d appreciate some opinions on a technical/warranty problem please:
We have a 4 month old Bosch WFX2868GB which recently stopped spinning. It washes OK but when it gets to the spin cycle it has some half-hearted attempts at turning then jumps to the end of the program.
We called Bosch who sent an engineer out to tell us that the problem was caused by
“ingress of water from drain system at rear of appliance causing damage to appliance electronics”
and that it would cost £300 to £350 to fix. We can buy a new one for £385.The engineer seemed to think that the water came from a blocked drain but I’m not convinced that this is the case as the sink and dishwaher drain to the same place and we’ve had no reason to suspect a blocked drain previously.
There does seem to be a little splashing around the drain pipe where the machine pipe hooks into it, but nowhere near the amount of water I’d expect to see if it was blocked. Can anyone tell me if it is likely to expect a washing machine to be damaged in this way and why this wouldnt be covered by a warranty?
I kind of expected that the electronics would be somehow protected from water, particularly when the water comes from the machine’s own drainage pipe.
Also, could there be another explanation for the problem? Could the engineer just have assumed that the drain was blocked because the floor was damp?

Hi
The warranty only covers manufacturing faults and break downs , water coming from an external source and getting into the workings of the machine is not a manufacturing fault .

Whilst washman’s reply does cover the manufacturers stance on guarantees correctly. I am intrigued as to this case and the servicemans eventual diagnosis? 😕
Now this model’s electrics are fully protected from any outside leak sources (including blocked or overflowing drains. The baseplate though not waterproof will not allow splashing water to penetrate at all!
The main electrics are behind the fascia panel and as well away from floods as you can get (lest of course you are located in downtown New Orleans? 🙁 )
If the drain was blocked and overflowing enough to ingress your machine and blow its electrics and stuff, I am sure by that time you would have donned your waders and waterproofs long before it went bang!
Second opinion time, and I would suggest you speak with their ‘Service Manager’ and get another guy along to take a shufty 💡
Please let us know the outcome 😀

I managed to get the engineer to give me a call.
It seems that there was a bit of a communication problem and that the water was not coming back down the pipe after all.
He reckoned that it was splashing back on to the back of the machine from the point where the drainage hose was hooked into the drain pipe. There is some evidence of water around this area and although it doesnt look like much, I supose it wouldnt take a lot to cause problems in the electrics.
Also, when I pulled the machine out again tonight, I noticed what could be little water marks on the top, so its possible it could have been pooling there before seeping inside.I’m still a bit surprised that washing machines aren’t better protected from water, seeing as they use so much of it, but I’m led to believe that this is not uncommon so I suppose I’ll just have to live with it. I’ll make sure the next one drains into a sealed pipe!
Thanks for the advice anyway.October 27, 2005 at 8:30 pm #151781gegsy

Had same fault a few years ago. Customer had 10+ cats in her house.
Liquid had ingressed down front of lid and into electronics…. needless to say it wasn’t water :eeek:Greg

I suggested you post your question at UKW but I now see you already had 🙂
