Because of the risk of loosing stuff, I use servicable but cheap gear . I use a digital multimeter from Argos at £20 ! It is actually better than the Avo mark 8 I used years ago which cost £400 and weighed about 10 times as much . Cheap tools work OK for me because I dont own them long enough to wear out . Other examples are a small metric socket set from the local cheapo shop at £2 a go [I buy 5 at atime ] and a big half-inch drive socket set from Argos at £20 .

I’d go for a cheap multimeter because it’s getting a lot of rough and tumble and you can’t afford to be having to worry about damaging it. My last one cost me £15 second hand 7 years ago. I could get one as good now for a tenner new. And in fact I may have done (though it has yet to stand the test of time). In fact the thing I got recently from Connect was £8.60 + vat and has a thermocouple. (Though the connector broke off the sensor as I unwrapped it, but I fixed that). (And today the supplied battery “Golite-heavy duty” — what have they done with the rotfl emoticon?– gave in after approx 20 mins total use). Still, tonight I went down Lidl’s and got a new alkaline PP3 for £1.50 and it all seems OK again.
Haven’t got capacitance which is sometimes useful but there’s other ways to check that, aren’t there? …aren’t there?Would be interesting to know what meggers people use. I’ve had mine (“Eagle” analogue) for 17 years. It was £40 second hand then. Still does the job but I’d like something very much more portable.

hi, my megger bm201,has juststarted its10th year of service. wonderful machine, easy to use, very rugged and reliable.although quite expensive .approx£200 i think?this machine does the insulation test as well as being a multimeter.

ParticipantCheap is ok ( I use an Argos multimeter ) but you still cant beat a Meggar it does show up faults that a multimeter wont and there is a legal issue.

Have you tried maplins? Cheap as indesit but not as nasty!! Mine measures temperature too which is great for those “it doesn’t seem to get as hot as it used to” customers and i got change from £20

Sounds ideal except I’d be worried about dropping it!
