I had the most unbelievable phone call today! The customer phoned to ask for a quote to fix the drum on her Whirlpool washing machine. The drum had collapsed under the weight of her 2 year old toddler who had climbed into the machine! Her four year old son came into the room saying that the baby was in the washing machine. She had to pull the kid out by its legs and wrecked the drum as she was stuck.

God… What if the four year old had shut the door!

My heart missed a beat or two.

I haven’t seen the machine but I wrote it off over the phone.

    hi
We had a case here, in the midlands where a toddler has climbed into a tumble dryer and the door had shut, and she unfortunely suffucated and had died. I think she was 2 to 3 years old. what a unfortunate accident for such young toddler

Wonder if these new bigger doors are a hazard. ❓

On the face of it, it sounds impossible to suffocate in a tumble drier but perhaps the child was smothered by the kitten.

Right how hard would it be for the manafactures to fit some some sort of sensor to say the drum is overloaded.should we push them as a colective to do this. This is something we can change 👿

Toddlers will be able to find dangerous situations no matter how many safeguards are put in place. This case is tragic but fortunately very rare and it would be well OTT to change the specification of appliances to prevent its recurrence. It would be like making a decree that everyone live in bungalows because a toddler falls from the window of a high rise block.
