Hi – I’m new to these forums and would appreciate any guidance regarding a wierd intermittent fault on a Samsung American Style Fridge:

Model: SR-S2028CSS, side-by-side, single compressor, ice maker
Age: About 3 to 4 years old

    Problem

For the past few days each morning when I first enter the kitchen I’ve noticed that that the compressor and the fans are silent as if the power has been cut to the fridge. The front digital display is OK and shows the normal target temps of -22 and +3 for freezere and fridge. However, on cycling the power the machine resets itself and the temps revert to what I believe is a more accurate -9 to -11 and +6 to +9 (looking inside it does appear to be defrosting and the fridge is warm). At this point the Motor starts and the fridge and freezer quickly cool to target temp. Then throughout the day the compressor cycles between on and off (typically 30 minute intervals) maintaining the target temps at -22 and +3

This machine has worked perefectly for the past few years and nothing untoward has happened to it in the last week.

    Engineers View

I called Expert Appliance Care. Their local engineer was baffled by this. He confirmed that the fans, motor and the PCB diagnostic were all OK. There was no ice preventing the fans from working – indeed it all looked very normal. He changed the fridge temp sensor (£87 parts and callout) but this has not cured the problem. His advice was to change it for a new model as problems were often due to bad wiring inside the case and insulation that couldn’t be fixed !!! 😡

    Other things I’ve noticed:

There appears to be a little more moisture in the fridge than normal and there’s a faint small of refrigerant in the fridge. THis is noticeable in the morning.

I notice a similar post below (July) from Bone who experienced similar symptoms – could I also be suffering from a failed defrost sensor and/or evaporator ?

    Appreciate your thoughts on this

    Thanks

Samsung side-by-side problems – but only at night !

Sorry – forgot to add the following:

    – This problem has happened each morning for the last 4 to 5 days
    – If I don’t cycle the power the motor doesn’t kick-in and the freezer fully defrosts
    – Both interior lights are working ok – i.e switching off when doors closed
    – Icemaker is workign ok and the little trap door is closing ok after use
    – I assume that during the day the constant opening and closing of the main doors causes the PCB to recheck it’s sensors and to maintain desired temps

    – As a temporary fix I propose to fit a digital time switch to force a couple of power cycles during the night

    Thanks

Re: Samsung side-by-side problems – but only at night !

I am sorry I can’t help, but I have what appears to be the same problem with a similar fridge. I have found that the temperature display remains constant whilst the fridge and more importantly the freezer gradually warms up. I wasn’t aware of the cycling the power, but that works also on mine.

Ours seems to have problems mid afternoon. It is weird that there appears to be a 24hr cycle.

We have had an engineer looking at it and has ordered parts from Samsung. I will keep you posted on progress.

    Problem Solved !

After a few days a significant build up of ice around the fridge element and fan suggested that the heater was at fault. Engineer tested it and found an intermittent fault with this heating element.

Replaced heater for £51.00 and all now ok

I still do not fully understand why the original problem only occured overnight but possibly the main circuit board rechecks the fridge and freezer temps more often during the day when the doors are opened or when the ambient temp is higher.

A timer switch programmed to power off the fridge for 1 minute every four hours does provide a temporary work-around but if the heater has gone you’ll quickly get the ice build-up around the fan.
