ParticipantWe are looking to replace our freestanding Belling electric cooker after 12 years of trouble free service.
Looking to spend about £500. Have been looking at Hotpoints although didn’t realise that they’d moved from freezers and washing machines etc into cookers aswell.
Can anyone recommend them or should I stick to Belling? Are they as good as they used to be?
Any other manufacturer recommendations greatly received.
thanks

Here we have a little conundrum. Hotpoint have been into cooking for years. Until they took over Creda, they bought badged appliances from SMEG. Shortly after the merger, we saw Hotpoint cooking appliances which were the familiar Creda product with the Hotpoint badge on. Fair enough, all now one company.
The irony with the current Belling product is that since they went bust and stopped manufacturing, most product now comes from…….. Hotpoint! Confused? I am, and I’m a professional 🙁 .
So, what to do? It is becoming harder to source “original” Belling spares now – there are plenty of pattern functional spares around, but the cosmetics are now virtually obsolete. If your current appliance is becoming cosmetically challenged, there is little you can do.
Given the budget, there’s a few things to look at. Tricity (now Zanussi) and Whirlpool are perfectly adequate, Creda is still available bearing in mind the above comments.
The simple truth is that you get what you pay for. There are plenty of cheap brands around, and they are just that. Consider SMEG, Bosch – Gornje is quite new but decent.
Bit of food for thought; others will no doubt post other opinions.

Hotpoint produced their own cookers for many years, in the 1950’s, even before the GEC takeover of AEI and English Electric. along with the GEC and English Electric ranges, they stopped cooker production for a few years in the 70’s, they were all very good solid products but became uneconomic to produce with out of date factories and the influx of cheap foreign cookers.November 21, 2005 at 10:45 am #154975wizzer

Any views on the Electrolux Insight Range?
Again, didn’t realise they did cookers alongside Hoovers!
