Participanti have a zanussi fls1185qw mashine, when it first runs its cycle it fills with water then spins flat out for a second then cuts out. this keeps happening and does nothing else. what could the likely causes be. does it have a speed controller that has gone faulty or is it more involved.
someone please help.December 4, 2005 at 7:41 pm #156806Penguin45

Start here:

Power off if going underneath.

Whist there are several possible causes for this fault , The most likely culprits are , A loose tacho magnet , or a faulty tacho coil . Before investigating further , PULL THE MAINS ELECTRICITY PLUG FROM ITS SOCKET . Pull the machine about half a meter out from the wall and lean it back . Make sure its safe , and get someone to hold it .Get a torch , and first look on the floor for any parts laying there . You may find the tacho coil retaining clip . This is a spring clip aout 30cms in diameter . Now look at the motor , the end nearest the front of the machine . The tacho coil is at the centre of the motor end . it is ashallow metal “can” with 2 [red?] wires coming out of it . Is it loose ? If it is , gently pull it out towards you . Behind it is the tacho magnet . It screws into the end of the shaft . If the magnet is loose , unscrew it and refit it with some contact adhesive on the threads . refit coil and retaining clip if you have it , or pt a bit of contact cement to retain it . If nothing is loose , Thecoil is probably open circuit and it is time for professional help unless you own a multimeter and know how to use it .

i will now go reassembly my mashine and have a look at the motor, i saw the wires in the end of the motor and wondered what that was for. it looked ok but will take it apart and check. i have looked at all the cable and circuitry and every thing looks good so i hope it is the tacho. thanks for all the help and will let you know if this is the problem…..glyn

ok here we go, I have taken the tacho coil out and check it for continuity and it is ok also looked at the shaft of the motor and that looks fine as well nothing was loose or coming away. Retaining clip was in place and all cables were ok. I cleaned the filter out which is located on the front of the machine at the bottom and this was full of gunk and i think it has never been cleaned, is it possible for this to have had any affect. All help is much appreciated as christmas looms and could do with not having to buy new one just yet. the machine looks in quite good order inside it not been leaking at all and doesnt get damp. cheers

When you say the shaft of the motor was OK, was the black magnet screwed all the way home (no thread showing) ?
Sometimes it can start to unscrew itself without actually coming all the way out causing this.

the magnet is in place and is inline with the coil. it seems that the magnet is not screwed but fixed by a rivet which was factory fitted and has a plastic cover with slits in.

Right, so you have one of 3 problems:
1) An earth fault through the motor which will effectively bypass the electronic controls. A megger will be required to determine properly.
2) The tacho coil itself has failed – no circuit when metered.
3) The electronics themselves have failed.Probably time for some pro help – check the link in my signature for a UKW engineer in your area.

thanks for the help it is most appreciated. i have removed the motor and tested all of the cable connections and they seem fine the tacho coil is working ok and i have used a digital multi meter and from a post on this site i have compared the resistence measurements and they are ok.
i have not been able to do a megger test to see if there is an earth fault as i dont have the equipment for it . i am trying to do as much as i can without getting outside help but think im running out of options. when you say the electronics have failed are you refering to the pcb board on the top of the timer ( timer type is ako 513 214 124 7526 02) is there any way i can test it to see if i need a new on before i have to call someone out. thanks for all the help….December 5, 2005 at 10:02 pm #156816Penguin45

Hi Mookal,
There is no practical way of testing the timer/control unit – this why you must be absolutely certain of all the other points before replacing it. It could prove to be an expensive mistake……… Last price I had was £115.41 plus VAT, so I’m sure you see the point! P/no for timer is 1247526-00/5 BTW.Regards,
