ParticipantHi,
This machine`s cool wall evaporator was developing a nice thick even layer (down and across) of frost on the rear wall where the evaporator is encased. Not a very old machine and the seals are perfect. Dial set at 2-3.
I suspected thermostat. The capillary of the stat is pushed into a sheath that begins at the front of the lid. The new stat went all the way in with no spare left to roll up. I used pt no. 2603142 as this was `before datecode 15` I think (if I understand date codes correctly) 😕 .
I have now been informed it is doing the same thing. Can these sheaths separate from the evaporators?
Any pointers would be appreciated
Laurence

Yep, it sounds like that may be the case 🙁
I get the same part number as well Laurence so I’m sure it’s the correct one.

More than likely a gas leak, although you get ice on back wall the evaporator is not cold enough to switch off. You may notice that the ice is not down the rear wall as far as it should be, or it is wet at the bottom of wall. See if the suction pipe back to compressor is cold, when appliance first switched on should be very cold to point of frosting (134a gas)

Going by the date code, was this appliance made in 2002?, if so the customer will have a 5 year parts gtee with Hotpoint , that is until a third party looked at it!!!!

Thanks Collin,
But the wall at the back had a nice thick even layer of frosting which froze some of the items in the fridge. The dimensions of the frosting was right across the rear and 10- 12″ down. I feel sure the temp was not being picked up by the stat.
Sadly Mal sometimes (very rarely thankfully) what seems the obvious straightforward answere to a problem turns out to be less so. I did not want my customer spending £100 for a stat. The greatest gift we all have is hindsight. 😉

Sorry Laurence, I thought you had already fitted a stat!
Cheers

Hi Colin,
Yes I did fit a stat but the problem of frost build up as explained above continued. Because the frost was so thick and very evenly distibuted on the back wall with no moister below it I have assumed that the stat phial sheath (stat phial iis pushed down tube from panel at the front of the lid where stat is mounted) has somehow stopped making contact with the foamed in evaporator. 🙁
All other operating conditions appear fine.
Laurence
