Leading electrical retailer Comet, logistics partner Wincanton, and social enterprise organisation Remploy, have won the 2005 National Recycling Award for Best Partnership Project for Recycling (25th October 2005).
The Partnership Project worked to align product take-back with Comet’s reverse supply chain in preparation for the introduction of the WEEE Directive next year. Comet and Wincanton developed a Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) collection service from Comet’s home delivery platforms; established sortation centres and provided recycling services for a percentage of the volume. To maximise re-use, Comet approached social enterprise organisation Remploy to provide ongoing refurbishment of selected white goods.
“Our partnership with Wincanton and Remploy was based on the individual strengths and deep knowledge of each party to provide an environmentally responsible, scaleable supply chain solution for WEEE goods. Our approach provided an early point of reference to the industry and illustrated how collaboration can work,” explains Phil Heaton, Head of Services, Comet.
Gordon Scott, managing director, Industrial, Wincanton, said: “This award demonstrates the successful relationship we have enjoyed with Comet and Remploy while simultaneously providing a WEEE benchmark for industry. The award also illustrates Wincanton’s capability of providing national solutions to retailers and producers in terms of WEEE collection and recycling facilities. “
In April 2005, Comet announced the national rollout of the scheme in conjunction with Wincanton, and anticipates receiving up to 500,000 items at its 15 home delivery platforms each year.
