ParticipantWhen I moved into my current house, 18 months ago, the existing fridge was included in the sale, this was a Zanussi ZFC 61/27. For a wee while though it has had a problem so excuse me for my lack of knowledge of fridges as I describe the symptoms.
At the top of the fridge compartment on the back surface there is a metal plate with an element running through it. There are a few drops of ice on this plate but on the bottom left hand corner there is a large hunk of ice hanging down from it. Water drips from this iceberg and collects in the V shaped channel half way down the back of the fridge compartment. There is what looks like a plastic green stopper in the “v” of the channel, is this some kind of drain? And if so, where would the water drain to if the green plastic stopper was removed?
As the water has no where to go it builds up in the channel and overflows to the bottom of the compartment and collects under the salad/veg containers until we mop it up.
Does anyone know what might be causing the build up of the ice on the “metal plate” and what needs to be done to resolve this problem? Is it a simple remedy or an expensive one? I am sure that my wife has defrosted the fridge but that hasn’t resolved the problem. Any help would be gratefully received.

The drain itself may be blocked, the green thing is there to be used to unblock the hole I think from your desription.
Below the metal plate, the water drains through the hole, down a tube then on to a tray on top of the compressor where it evaporates.
This may explain the lump of ice as well if water isn’t able to escape correctly.

Thanks for the reply Dave.
When you say the water drains through a hole do you mean one that is behind the metal plate that I can’t see or are you referring to the one in the V channel?
To find and unblock the tube I would have to take the back of the fridge off, any idea if this would be a complicated task?

The drain hole is in the V channel, normally the blockage is either in the hole or just beyond it (food particles generally).
Poke something down it (not too roughly) and see if that improves it, you can test by pouring small ammounts of water down and (if you see round the back) check that the water reaches the plastic tray on top of the motor (compressor) 🙂

Didn’t really do anything but the water is now draining away down the hole.
Thanks for your help.

If the drain is clear but you are still getting ice forming on the back wall then it sounds like the insulation is failing. It may be worth getting an engineer to check but if it is an insulation fault then there is no real effective cure for this i’m afraid.
