ParticipantUsed to happen all the time on Indesit as you’ll all remember. Now I find it sometimes on Zanussi. Spec you all know what does it and therefore don’t bother discussing it normally?

Poor quality/overdosing of detergents is one of the reasons, along with poor water quality and additives.
I guess chemicals on clothes put in to wash could also cause this.

I found baby oil and many make-up removing lotions do this( I don’t use them myself, just a sanding block). I always ask when encountering this and normally there is a young lady in the house.

Well, those things seem likely but why does the problem seem restricted to certain makes? I have a feeling that some “rubber” spontaneously turns to goo (in patches) due to something in its own composition.

The machine is not in a pub or a restaurant is it?
Beer of beermats and oils and greases have this effect. Using machines on boil washes continuously also used to do thisDecember 21, 2005 at 5:46 pm #158602leavemetogetonwithit

Ah! The last one I did, which prompted my inquiry, is used to do the washing (c.3 loads/day) for a restaurant. So could be the reason.
Thanks.

(Perhaps I better tell them to wash the stuff before putting it in the machine in future 😆 ).December 21, 2005 at 6:41 pm #158603cornwell40

Had this a lot when people have skin problems and use petroleum jelly to help with it. The door seal composition just goes weak and droops until it splits. Yep same problem with pubs, restaurants etc. causing a chemi reaction of sorts when greasy towels are washed at high temps.

many years ago a man came into the workshop and asked if I could fit a hose to his hoover twin tub ok I said Ill see if Ive got one. No no he said HE would provide the hose and give me a couple of spare so I wasnt out of pocket. Turns out he worked in the factory that made them so he knew these were good ones. apparantly the day shift was well supervised and turned out good stock night shift cut corners and banged out high volume on peace work rate without quality control. I often wonder if this explains poor hoses.

The problem is that if you asked most people to describe ‘rubber’ they would say that it is black, fairly strong, and pliable, when in its natural state it is gooey, slimy, sticky, yellowy greyish stuff. It is only the chemicals and carbons added to it that give it its strength and rigidity, and it is the various chemical reactions of the detergents, fats (acids) bleaches, skin creams etc that help it to return to its natural state.

Ive found two main reasons is grease from kitchen clothes happens a lot in pubs and returants the second is people with skin problems use cortisone cream this decomposes the rubber if you have a machine like this allways check the hoses, I had a customer whose son used this cream and she needed new hoses and door rubber every six months,
so if you have this problem allways ask if someone in the familly suffers with excema as they have to use lots of strong cortisone cream.December 26, 2005 at 4:03 pm #158608roly16

Some manufacturers [Miele & BSH for example] supply silicone based seals which are resistant to this. They are more expensive though. I once ordered one for a Travel Inn/Brewers Fayre Miele washer without checking the price first; it came to about £120 if I remember correctly! 😯 Luckily I managed to persuade them to have it done.
